View Full Version : Stopping extra "MasterBeauty" pass from rendering?

hey all:)
FYI: Maya 2009 - MR renderer

When one sets up any number of passes in the Render Layer Editor, by default Maya outputs NOT ONLY the pass you want, but ALSO a “MasterBeauty” pass of your whole scene...or parts of it anyway.. (i.e. like the the master layer)

How do I friggin turn this OFF? lol.

I have a 3d matte projection that is rendering at 2k res.
Each main “beauty” pass (not MasterBeauty) takes around 2 minutes per frame to render. (luckily the shot is only 120 frames)

Then:
For every separate render layer (pass) that I setup, for example, a simple preset Matte pass of a few objects, that by itself, takes a NANOSECOND to render, Maya then takes the time to ALSO needlessly render a “MasterBeauty” pass along with every matte pass frame rendered.
Maya does this for any pass type I create.

Its very annoying and needlessly very time consuming.

So, where do we turn the “MasterBeauty” “feature” off?
I searched the help, and all it says is that it DOES output this pass for every layer rendered, NOT how to turn it off.

Thanks in advance anyone!

PS, I’m rendering using Mental Ray, in case that makes a diff.
And it looks like it “MAY” because when I right-click on any layer, and choose Attributes, under the Render Pass Options there is a “beauty” pass checked to ON, BUT:
the title of the flyout is:
“Render Pass Options (obsolete for Mental Ray)” so this does nothing to stop the extra “MasterBeauty’ pass from being rendered:(

The master beauty cannot be turned off. All the render passes come from that master beauty because passes are dependent of that master due to mental ray buffer rays. The master beauty has to render out. All the passes get seperated from that master beauty.

If you need to render out just a matte pass, then just render out a matte render layer the old way using render layers instead of using render passes.

Render passes do save render time when you have numerous passes to render. If you just need to render 1 or 2 passes, it may may faster to just render layers instead of rendering using render passes.

Holy friggin crap, lol
I've been using the Render Layer Editor in the lower-right of the gui below the channel box for years, and I just thought Autodesk just added a TON more presets to add, but now after reading up more on it, I see that 2009 has a new workflow for me to work with.

Its pretty slick too.

Thanks again:)
