View Full Version : From Zero to Hero - Character Rigging CD
lildragon 06-23-2003, 11:19 AM For the past few months Javier "Goosh" Solsona & Lluis Llobera have been actively working on a tutorial CD concentrating on the complicated task of successful rigging your character. The first CD is entitled "From Zero to Hero".

Looks like a nice cd, the authors always seem to know what they are talking about at least :)

show, that must've been added afterwards, I saw no link at first either :).
Sounds like a potentially interesting CD.. though I'm also thinking there are several automated rigging tools available, some of them even free, and they strike me as pretty capable and tweakable for many situations. Ah, idunno, it's not like 60 bucks is super-hyper expensive, provided you can come out the other side with a working knowledge of maya-rigging.
It'd be cool to hear from people having bought this thing.

It's always good to understand the underlying process b4 you automate it, for ie, if the rig was to cause an error that's hindering production, you have to contact the author who more than likely will be busy or may not get back to you within a few hours, what do you do when the director is hovering over your shoulder watching the clock and you're deadline is 1 hour away?
Always start with the foundation.

If you are a maya user (I'm not - 3dmax) who wants this info, then I can only say one thing:

I'm curious if this CD also explains facial setups. I downloaded the TROLL setup a long time ago and was SUPER impressed. I studied it for ages trying to figure out how it works, and stole a few ideas for my own rig. But it is a very complex setup. If this CD was called "How the Troll setup works" I'd buy it. Who am I'm kidding, I'm buying it anyway. I'll post a review after I've played with it.

I downloaded the troll as well and it seemed a bit too over-done for my taste. I like to keep puppets a bit more simple. It seems that when a puppet gets overly complicated, the animator has too many options and spends most of their time hitting buttons rather than animating.
A well constructed puppet, however, is an animators best friend. The more 'intelligent' the puppet is intuitavely, the less the animator has to think about 'how it works,' and more about how it moves.
Thats just my opinion, however. I downloaded the troll and got irritated with how many controls the monkey had. I like just a handful of controls to keep it simple....:hmm:

I just wanted to chime in and say I had the opportunity of using one of Javier's rigs on a character IK Joe created by Daniel Martinez Lara http://www.pepeland.com
It's one of the best rigs I have ever used and I have to say a great rig makes animation so much easier and so much more fun.
Javier's rig was also an inspiration for my instructor and classmates as we tried to emulate his rig while in school.
Check out Javier's website too http://www.digital-dreams.net
This is definitely worth checking out...this guy know what he's talking about!!
Thanks for the link lild

We hope you like it...
We spent quite a bit of time polishing all the details and to make sure that it would appeal to a broad audience.

I've learnt sooo much since Ik-Joe I'd like to re-do it all.
I'm glad you are finding it useful though.

Hey STZ
Thanks for buying it!!!
Your CD is on the way.. it should take only a few days to get there ;)
We've tried to keep this CD simple. Doing a facial setup like in the troll would confuse a lot of people that are starting out.
Though it has, what we think, some neat ideas, and it comes with some cool scripts that we use all the time and hopefully you find them useful
The inside Maya document will appeal to all levels. It's a pretty big document on how Maya works and how to approach rigging.
We do have plans for more advanced setups and they would include quite a few different facial setups.
I like the idea of a "The Making of Troll" :D
Will keep you all updated!

Well, as Javier said the plan is to do some further CDs, focused on more advanced aspects of the rigging process... If this one proves successful!
I can't wait to hear what you guys think about it!!

Well, the Troll rig does have quite a few controls...
I'd like to see what you think is too much or what you would change -- I'm not taking this bad at all, mind you!! I'm always open to learn more!! :-))

I'm very exicited about your new Rigging CD goosh. I'm thinking about purchasing it, but a have a few questions for you.
Is it video based, or pdf, or ?
It's one PC/Mac CD?
Do the included scripts work on Maya 4.5 and or 5 for the Mac version of Maya?
Thank for taking the time.

Hey Sheep
We went the paypal way 'cause we thought it would be the easiest (and fastest) for everybody.
I do realise that not everybody has credit cards and that makes it a little bit hard for some people :(
If you don't want to use PayPal you can send me a draft or certified check (mail me at jsolsona@digital-dreams.net and I'll send you all the details)

I agree with some, I am NOT happy that I had to open a PayPal account to purchase the CD. I've never trusted PayPal, and I don't like that it was not spelled out on the order form ANYWHERE that you are indeed opening a PayPal account. I tried reading all of the fine print I could find because I knew they would try something tricky like that.
I'm going to cancel my new Paypal account, and I hope that means the order still goes through. Let me know if it doesn't.
I'm curious, do you also get a kick back from PayPal for each new account that is opened? I noticed that PayPal still gives $5.00 for opening a new account, and I didn't notice a $5 discount on my CD purchase.

Hi Steve.
Ok.. there seems to be a little bit of confusion here.
We are only using PayPal because we found that it's the easiest way to do any transactions over the web when you are dealing with people all over the world (I know there are others like PayPal, but I did a lot of research and I found them to be the biggest and safest)
The other alternative was to send a bank draft, certified check or wire transfer. And all those cost quite a bit (here, is $5, $10 and $30 respectively)
PayPal only handly the payment. The rest doesn't go through them at all.
We do all the shipping (I dropped your CD at the Post Office this morning myself) so I guarantee that your CD has been sent.
As far as new accounts go, we don't see a cent of those $5. As far as I know, they credit YOUR account with $5 which you can either use on a new purchase or withdrawn to your own bank account.
I hope that clarifies a few things.
Sorry for misunderstanding

Great to hear you guys are getting a CD together. I know I appreciated when Lluis rigged the Troll model I created for the 10second Club. I'm also glad and thankful to have him contributing rigging to the AlienZ Collaboration here on CGTalk as well! Awesome work guys! I'll definately be interested in seeing your CD!

It's half of the price alias want for their dvds...
If it's worth the money why not. I know how good you guys are, so why not give it a try? I hope this will help me get to know rigging a bit.
For me as a rigging beginner this will be a great help, I trust in you
