View Full Version : animation: IK setup problem
armageddon_2k1 06-23-2003, 10:35 AM Hi, this is my first topic on CGTalk.com ever. I asked this question on a dutch forum, but I got no replies.
Here's the problem:
I'm modelling a mechanical spider and I wanted to use IK to animate it, since I've never tried that before.
Everything worked great, and I made some testrenders, like this one:

http://wieringen.dyndns.org/arjan/GOT/c12/wip4.jpg
But I want to create an animation to show the hydraulics.
My idea was to move the middle body up a bit, and the feet will stay at the same position. But it didn't work out as I planned :annoyed:

Ok, I can put the feet at the right position manually, but in an animation that's just too much work and i'll get ugly results.
I think it's a basic IK question and I don't get IK completely, but some help would be appreciated :)

Hi 2k1,
I've made a tut with which you might be able to solve this.
Here's the link: http://www.spectrum-animation.com/Download%20-%20Tutorials.htm
Hope this helps,

You're not describing your problem in a lot of detail here.. it sounds like when you move the body upwards, so goes the legs? And what you want, is the ability to move the body whilest keeping the placement of each foot... ie. exactly what IK is supposed to do for you.
If that's the case, then I'm a little confused.. you say you can move the placement of each foot (or whatever the hell it's called on a mechanical spider :)). How do you do that? It should be that they each foot follows some sort of dummyobject, is that the case? When you move the body upwards, do these dummyobjects then also move upwards, or do they stay put, or what?
If none of what I asked makes sense, just explain more about your rig. More pictures, maybe an animation of what it looks like when you move the body around. You can render/show just your rig too, there's no particular need to show the high-res geometry. It's a nice spider btw I think, but spiders has 6 legs? Or, eight maybe, but two of them are for eating or some crap like that. It's mechanical so hey, you can do whatever you want, just pondering out loud here :).

That's exactly what I mean. Since this was my first shot at IK, I think I made a big mistake at the body part. All the legs work fine with IK (I use Interactive IK). I have to rig it again I think.
Here's a pic of my spider, bones + helpers only:

I know it's probably a stupid IK setup and I want to make a new one, except I can't find a good tutorial on the web or in my book according to this, because I'm pretty new to IK.
4 legs? Yeah I know...I was just modeling and I didn't even think of it :D
Look into using IK Solvers instead of Interactive IK. Solvers such as the HI Solver create IK chain goals, that will stay pinned down, so that feet stay planted. Interactive IK will not create a goal, and feet won't stay planted with it. Interactive IK is fine for things like mechanical arms, but not so good when the end of the chain needs to plant on something such as the ground.
