View Full Version : Female Face Study
Ameli 12-30-2008, 04:53 PM Hello CGTalk members,
I'm a relatively new and very inexperienced convert to digital painting, and am looking for tips and techniques to improve my attempts at realism.
This is a practice piece, and I am looking for suggestions and improvement techniques, both specifically in the piece and overall. I'm aware that my values desperately need help somehow (I've always struggled with values for some reason), and would like some advice on how to restructure the nose for a more realistic look. I'm sure there are infinite other places where experienced critics could offer insight also.

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Hi there,
Welcome in the era of digital painting :p
Coming from a traditional background I am still strugling as well with all that digital stuff ... like you pointed out yourself ... values / contrast are lacking here ...a good trick is to narrow your eyes when looking at your study ... that will help in seeing the values better ( or the lack of them ) ... The area around the eyes and below the nose def need some darker values ... that should help automatically in shaping up the nose ... also the upper lip should be darker ... overall I like the usage of colours ... you already established a believable skin tone ... you might want to go even wilder in using non-skin tones ...
Overall looking good ... hoped this helps,
Sedas
I think your values look good here. The nose - I think overall it's rather good but it could be better. The highlight may be a tad too low in my opinion. You really should put more darker shadow underneath the nose where the nostrils are. It doesn't have to be more than a small line of the same colour you have used elsewhere for the shadows... just for better definition.
If you want to create more fleshy look - why don't you try a bit brighter shades of orange or reddish orange to where the light meets the shadow to give the nose a more transparent look. Don't go overboard with it though ;-) You have to apply it carefully.
The eyes seem to be too high up but otherwise they are pretty nice looking. Check the porpotions by looking at the face and imagining the top of the head . The eyes are basically in the middle of the head - measure from the chin to the eyes and result x 2 is the head's overall height. So you see it's pretty longish.

Thanks very much for the critiques, Sedas and Cati. I've done some touchups following your advice.
I've added shading to the upper lip and bottom of the nose, as well as darkening the areas around the eyes somewhat. I also shortened the length of the face, and added just a little more contrast. I haven't adjusted the values much, so I know the piece still is lacking there a bit.
If anyone has critiques to offer to the revised image, they would be much appreciated!

The face looks much better now. :-) Well done!
Few small points: I'd continue the shadow of the nose all the way to the right brow. The nose seems to cut short and it makes the right eye protrude beyond the nose - as you know nose ends up where our forhead starts. The right eye needs some more shape and shadow.

Hi and welcome! I'm pretty new to the community and digital painting as well. I'm going follow this thread as well as I'm am practically attempting the same thing right now in my thread which you might benefit from as much as I'll benefit from this one.

So don't mind me! And feel free to C&C my work.
If I may, the only thing I might be able to help with in regards to the nose is to try really dark values for the nostrils, if they are showing at all in her nose. At the moment I can't tell if they are supposed to be are not, it sort of looks like you've lightly shaded in the nostrils.
