View Full Version : Got core i7 boards questions
Nea381 12-29-2008, 03:30 PM So I guess the first thing is, I was only able to find motherboards supporting up to 12gb of ram for the DDR3 1366 i7 boards. Also am I correct in assuming that there are no dual gpu boards yet for the i7's ? The main boards I keep finding are the Asus x58's usually accompanied by the Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965 Nehalem. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115200)
Just wanted to check to make sure that's where the top of the tier was before I went and got anything. :)
Oh and does anyone have any cooling system recommendations for the i7's I hear that they are hot lil taters >.>

The MSI Eclipse SLi is the most fully featured X58 Board.
-24GB max RAM(6x 4GB)
-Triple SLi and Crossfire
Since You live the USA I've used the Newegg link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130215).
The i7 X965 is the most powerful CPU around, so if you have the money get one.
Personally the standard intel heatsink should do the job for cooling unless you're going to seriously overclock it, but if you have experience with water cooling(or have a friend who is willing to fit it for you) then Danger Den are selling a decent waterblock for the core i7 here (http://www.dangerden.com/store/product.php?productid=382&cat=0&page=)
You'll need a radiator(at least 2x120mm), a good pump, tubing, fittings and coolant so it's a pretty big job. Several other water cooling manufacturers are selling socket 1366(i7) blocks as well, so check review on which is best if you do watercool.

When you don't need Hybrid-Technology you can also give the MSI x58 Platium a go.
It has also a supported RAM amount of up to 24GB, like the Eclipse,
but is around 110€ cheaper.
If you want your machine for hardcore gaming, sure the Eclipse board is great, especially because you have the Audigy soundcard cirectly combined with the board, but for this and some small other differences you pay also more money. In my opinion it's not worth the money, when you look for an application pc.
Here the Platium version with 24gig support (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130216) (there are also other versions of the Platium edition, so pay attention!)

The computer is a workstation, im not really worried about gaming on it as much as I am for rendering power, cpu speed, and ram speed.
But thanks for info, and on top of that I take it that the eclipse is still the better of the two for use of the SLI ?
