View Full Version : closestPointOnMesh in maya5?
I don't have maya 5. I'm thinking of writting a script that uses closestPointOnMesh but it would be pointless if it worked only with maya 4.5. Does closestPointOnMesh work for maya 5?
cheers

I do believe the DEV kit for Maya 5 includes a plugin example for closestPointOnMesh

what this command make?
it just tells you the closest point on another object, given a point for an original object. Useful for copying values between different surfaces.
I guess my question should be do normal users have closestPt in their plugins folder for maya 5? Doesn't sound like it if its an example in the developement package.

Also very useful for constraining objects to each other...(utilises 'point on surface info node'):
If I remember correctly, by right clicking on a surface, you can, for instance, constrain a locator to a point on surface, and either parent another object to the locator, or use the locator as a modelling tool, etc. etc.
ktpr: Thanks for the 'ktpr_subdAutomap' update, BTW - works great ;)

There is a closestPointOnMesh in Maya 5, it either comes with the program, or bundled in with the Bonus Tools. I forget which, but I've used it recently.
