You have to enable DOf at the camera (depth tab)and the render settings (effects tab)
A mistake I often make is that I have the editor camera selected instead of a regular camera.

hmm, ok not that i'm accusing or anything, but firstly cinema comes with a nice thick manuals explaining how to use it's tools, and secondly 8.001 was the early-bird, and seeing as maxon sent everyone who got an early bird their full 8.012 cd, and then the free updates bring cinema up to 8.1 have been available on their site for some months it seems likely that you're using a warez version of cinema. warez are not tolerated on CG-Talk, and it's extremely foolish to parade the fact that you might be using warez here. especially as several representatives of the companies that produce this software frequent these boards. i'm sorry if i've jumped to a tall conclusion, but the evidence seems to point to this.
Actually it's a demo :)
Oh and thanx handige_harrie, I'll try that right away!

then at the very least you should download the latest demo 8.1 (i don't believe that 8.001 was ever released as a demo, srek correct me if i'm wrong).
It has to be lol, I got this demo from their site and the info says it's V8.001.. and I never checked back for updates :)

A year's a pretty long time in 3D application years--half a lifetime! :)

Too get back on topic:
Like Handgie said u need to tick the box in the render effects tab.
And u cant use glow with dof BTW
Yah it's working now :D I had the blurring strength set on 100% first.. eek, that's scary :D
Anyway, thanx a million guys! I'll show you a render when its finished :)
After many hours of rendering, a try at realism:
