View Full Version : Grass Solutions?
DeltaAddiction 12-26-2008, 10:18 PM Hey guys, I'm working on a short animation for a local contest and the main set I have is a neighborhood, in which the ground is mostly covered in grass. Does anyone have any good solutions for grass? (I'm working with Maya 2008 and I don't have zBrush) Thanks a mil!

What does "grass solution" mean? If you are asking for a technique then hair/fur will give best looking results. Other thing you can do is to make a displace map for the grass (good but not as realistic as hair/fur). If it is related to plain texturing, do a planar mapping on the terrain and make a texture in your favourite painting program.

Hah, my bad, grass solution does sound like some technical thing. Alright, I'll try fur. Thanks.

Actually, I can't get enough fur to show up for the grass. How do I increase the frequency of fur showing up? (I've never used fur before :P)
EDIT: Sorry for the double post, forgot I already posted. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like: http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/9632/housemodelzc6.jpg

I'd recommend getting a DVD or book on Fur. It's got a lot of parameters.
Increase your density in the attribute editor.

you'll either want to use textures/cards for the distant shots, or tie the density of the 'fur' to your camera distance - the shot your showing will take forever to render if you covered the ground in grass...

While this is a max tutorial, you can use pretty much the same technique in maya to make grass using displacement instead of fur...

May be worth checking out.
