View Full Version : Modeling : Blanket
ivo D 06-22-2003, 04:01 PM im making a bed.. now i have the pillows but the blanket sucks to model..
i used sub d.. but im not satisfied.. it has to be 100% realistic.. but dont know how to get it done..
any suggestions?

Max offers a great dinamics simulation tool, it would be a great waste not to use it... :)
The cloth component of the Reactor would do the trick. However, if you need to modell a thicker blanket sort o' thing, you can use the combination of cloth and soft body dinamics.
Just build a blanket shaped box, with a dense mesh, and create a bit bigger roundy box around it to be the cloth covering.
Takes lots of calculation time, and tweaking, but worths it a lot.
And after the simulation (drop the blanket, pillows, ect...) you can still edit it with tradittional subdiv. modeling...

Feel free to post conceptart or examples of what you want to accomplish, and also your current results and why they don't work. Imo your current question is simply too vague to properly answer, sounds like you're asking for the solution to a problem that likely has no single right answer. All depends on the need of the scene.

Yep, this look like a good place to use reactor.
A major problem with this blanket could be, that is not following the scene geometry in a natural way. Looks "modelled" insted of "dropped"...
In cases like this, a dynamic simulation can save lots of lots of time... ;) A good reactor cloth setup takes far less time to do, than modelling the whole stuff from the ground up...
Hope you get something that pleases you. :)

Hi,
what about using SimCloth? It's a free plugin for MAX and I am very satisfied with the results.
You can download it from the creators' website under www.chaosgroup.com

I'd actually recommend simcloth for this particular simulation.
Try this:
Get simcloth: www.chaosgroup.com
It's free.
After DL and install, select your pillows, matress, and whatever else you want the cloth to deflect on.
Next, apply a simcloth modifier to them, and set the type to "deflector".
Now, creat a plane. Make it anywhere from 15x15 segments, up to 30X30, but this will depend greatly on the poly count of your collision objects(matress, pillows, etc.)
Now, move the plane over the bed. Just a few feet.
Select the cloth, and add a simcloth modifer to it, and make sure it's type is set to "cloth".
Without touching any parameters, try running the simulation. The higher poly the objects, the softer the cloth will look. Also make sure that you're scene is at 1-1 scale with real-world coordinates. This will ensure that the simulation will run properly.
After you have run the sim, and gotten the blanket to your liking shape-wise, take a snapshot of the last frame to generate a non-animated mesh of the cloth in it's at rest position. Now, go download "solidify" if you don't have it already.
You can get it here:
www.maxplugins.de
After installing the plugin, apply the solidify modifier to the plane that is your cloth. Adjust the thickness to your liking, perhaps as a height segment, and then apply a meshsmooth modifier.
That's just how I'd do it, but maybe it'l spark something.
Good luck, man!

Any type of cloth simulation will do...
Reactor, Simcloth, Stitch etc...

We are recommending simcloth because it's cloth dynamics are more accurate than reactor, and less prone to problems. Also, he could be using Max 4, in which case, he would'nt nessarily have reactor.
Also, Simcloth is the only free cloth tool for max.
But you're right, any one will work.

3DZealot in the name of all N00bies.. i thank you
Hope Ivo D wan't mind taking his thread to ask another question here rather than opening new thread
Can you use the same method to simulate curtain blowed by the wind beside open window :D
I tried some experimenting and wasn't satisfied with the result.. maybe the trick is to use right object for deflector..
can it be achived using simcloth

it uses space warps so.. so make some wind outside..sliding beside the outside of your window.. on way..than if the curtain doesnt move the right way.. you can allways fake it.. by switching the axes around.
but if you just need a still hm
oke..thinks this will work..
model your curtain in normall hang mater.. get some ref.. for it , its just 10 min work..
why this?.. caus you cant use simcloth for that shape i think.. it is just the way it folds.. but how it bend over objects below it.. a cher or something that can be controled afterwords..
but you need wind.. so just look up a tut.. for creating a storm or something.. seen them a few times.
and than let that react with your cloth.. and youll have it.. animatable to than ;)
