I'm new to Maya in a lot of ways, and I was just wondering how you would go about making carpet. As in be able to distinguish between each fiber. I've already tried insane res texturing which was just a waste of time, or maybe i was doing it wrong. I tried displacement, bump and just straight up images..

Help?

To be honest, I think texturing and bump maps are your best bet.

I dont think you want to sit and try and model every fiber on the carpet:argh:

So I would make the model as detailed as possible, but when it comes to the actual fibers and stuff I would use textures. You should put a post up in the texturing area asking about some help on texturing a carpet. In terms of modelling it, it's pretty straight forward.

I know I probably never helped you too much here, but there's really nothing more to it.

texturing is a very good way to go, but if you are looking for another way you could also try a hair simulator plugin. With a little adjustment, you could have a pretty nice rug going.

I'm not too familiar with the maya hair simulator as I am new to maya also, but I remember from my 3ds max days that it could be done. You might also check out shave and a haircut, although I cannot guarentee that it can do this. I don't know how much is costs either :hmm:

The best way to make carpet is with either Paint Effects or Fur, which Maya does best.....so go that way instead of bump mapping.
