View Full Version : Water shading and modelling
brasco 06-22-2003, 01:06 PM Just wandering if anyone can help me with a couple of problems i'm having with creating water splashing in C4D using meta and particles.
I've got the fluid dynamics ok, but when i bring in a deflector the it looks pretty bad. here's what i've done so far. Feedback would be cool and anyone who nows how to 'splash' without realflow please show me how!

i wish i could say something, but i've been trying to conceptualize the saem thing for a few weeks and instead started character animation. I think it looks great right now. hope someone helps you. good luck.

Thanks Geoff
Did you get very far with the water techniques? i can't find anywhere that doesn't just say use RealFlow
anyway here's another attempt i did earlier today, as you can see once in the glass the particles don't behave like fluid (looks too viscous) anyone got any ideas?

i didn't get really far at all. I wanted to show water hitting a face and splatering and everyone told me to use meta balls, and i would but i am lacking processing power. my computer almost dies when i add the meta objects. i'll try after this summer, when i plan on upgrading to a dual processor.

i think that looks GREAT! im lovin it...care to share the water settings? i havent seen fluid look that great....that great! awesome.
it lookes very awesome indeed! i am very curious about ur water settings as well, id looooove to know them ;)

Thanks for the great response!
@geoff: i know what you mean, i had to ressusitate mine a few times before getting the meta setting to a workable level! i'm gonna upgrade soon as well, try www.googlegear.com
@Kotayus+Xeno: I'm not with my own workstation until thursday night but will definitley give you the settings accuratly then, for now here's what I remember:
For the first pic i used SLA banji, can't quite remember that one loadsa settings, give you them on thurs.
For the second pic i used standard shader..
Transparency-
Brightness ~95-98% (so reflection is seen better)
Refractive index 1.333
and activate fresnel
Reflection- max 100% bright
Specularity- plastic, not quite sure but about 50% high and 4% wide? tweak it for best result.
[If using on a plane or floor surface try using different bumps and stuff, make sure it's dark below or behind water surface or you'll get no reflection!]
Please tell me how that looks, i'll give you the exact settings on thurs.
Jon:thumbsup: :wavey:
Will definitely tell u what it looks like, im @ work atm, so i cant do it now unfortunately, but still, thnx for the settings!
I really think its cool that u are doing this in C4D instead of a 3rd party app, it is looking damn nice!
Im dying to know how the heck u achieved this, since ive been trying to create realistic flowing water as well..and i had to reach for realflow in the end..but of course it would be way cooler to do it in cinema!
very nice that first one looks ace.
would it animate?

@JIII: yeah it would, C4D has some really good particle effectors, it's emmiter based, but my PC just isn't fast enough.
Well i promised i'd give you those settings and here they are:
ok the ones i gave off the top off my head weren't perfect here's the corrections-
transparency 89%
specular 45% width 100% height
yep it's that simple.
get back to you on the SLA

Hi again,
I haven't been checking the forums for a while coz i'm in sunny switzerland!
Just wandering Xeno have u used the settings yet? if so did they work?
Loadsa inspiration out here, just been tio see the largest hydroelectric damn in switzerland-new project when i get back!
Jon
yea the settings workjed, the water looked great indeed!
atm, im still strugling to get the best results using metaballs, basically, its not happening..Like u said, i would love to do this in just cinema for a change!
edit: It seems to go a lot better now, ill post an animation as soon as its finished rendering..and as soon as i find a host for it ;)
Hey c4dgenesis. I have been messing around with it for a while now and it seems as though im stuck in the same place. The deflector really isnt doing anything realistic.
Have u by any chance found a way of making the particles "bounce" up realistically?

Hi xeno, i know what u mean when animated it just does't look quite right.
I haven't really had a go at that yet but i've had a few ideas (shortcuts!)
Try placing another emmiter to follow the increasing water level, have u got eXpresso? i don't but i have tried it, bet u could get something good out of that otherwise try keyframing it (boring i know!)
As for the deflector do u mean a flat surface coz then try using exponenetial falloff in meta u'll need more particles though.
I'm not with my PC until sunday but i can give u the more detailed settings on the meta if u'd like.
My motto is IMPROVISE sometimes works!
jon
Well, i have absolutely zero xpresso experience, but im trying to do it with the combination of some affectors to compensate the rather linear bounce of the deflector. Ill post the settings later on, i first want to see if it works, to save me the embarassment :)
