Hi everyone,
i am an architect and i have been producing 3D visualisations for 3 years now on Max, but i am a newbie in animation. i have a first project that requires animating a coin that falls and spins on itself before resting on the ground...i was wondering if there was a way besides manually keyframing the whole process.
i am also new in this forum so if my question is too obvious or too vague please bare with me:)
Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance

i'd imagine you could probably try to get something like that using reactor, but since it's a simulation, you might spend as much time changing settings and rerunning the sim as you would just aninmating it manually :\

so i'd say just do it by hand, it sucks, but that's probably the easiest way (at least that i can think of, although i only just got out of bed a few mins ago ;)

my suggestion to you is to tape a coin (with a camcorder) doing what you said and then saving it as an .avi then put that in you viewport and rotoscope it.

that's how i'd do it. and if you don't have a camcorder barrow one. if you don't know what rotoscoping is then look it up on google.com

Thanks guys,
actually i am trying to get the job done with Dynamic simulations.
it's colliding well with the ground but still not spinning...i'd hate to think that i will have to manually animate it!!! dunno where to start in that case:) but thanks anyway.

I'm guessing that you've starting the spinning before you run the sim? Reactor does some interesting motion interpolation from the objects prior to the simulation.

Try backing up a bunch of frames (say, into the negative), and spin the coin about 10 or so times.

Hopefully, when the sim runs, it will pull that animation into the sim, and then the dynamics will take over. Kinda getting it started.

Give it a shot.

Thanks 3DZ
Reactor? haven't explored it yet...but it seems it's worth it.
Thanks again

Wait a sec, if you are not using R5, you won't have it. If so, it's the way to go.

If you don't have R5, go here:

www.chaosgroup.com

And download simcloth. It's a robust freeware dynamics plugin for max 3,4, and 5.

You can use "rigid bodies" to calulate all this stuff using dynamics.

I'd avoid using max's built-in dynamics simulator, as it's ancient, and, well, it sucks.

Use reactor if you've got R5, and Simcloth if you don't.

i am using R5 allright,
just never explored Reactor...i produce most of the time stills, and some walkthroughs...but if this project goes well it might open opportunities to more fun stuff :)

Awsome!

Have a look in the reactor manual as it's pretty good at explaining everything.

Good luck!
