dload the beta of the rib exporter and test it if you want and you have the time, this is one of the best things that C4D could have encountered. Enjoy

This could be very big!

FWIW, I'll be looking at using this with 3Delight (http://www.3delight.com). Its free and can be used for "limited scale" commercial work...what ever that is.

Lets all encourage this development.

Is there currently any way to export the displacement channel
of a material to a true displacement shader? (wishful thinking).

Also, does anyone here have enough REYES rendering experience to comment on which of the downloadable renderers is easiest to use and
seems to produce the best results (i.e. BMRT, Pixie, Aqsis, AIR, 3Dlight)?

A perosn who thinks like me, gotta love canadians ;)

I've started a post in the lighting and rendering forum to ask about those very two concrens, as I want displacement mapping, and I'd like to use one that was a little simpler, since I don't have a lot of time to be learning one more thing at the moment :/

anyways the link is here so you can keep an eye on it see if an answer pops up there.

Crap what amazing timing! I'm just starting to get my teeth cut with 3delight and BMRT :)

Looking forward to the progress!!

i know this is and old thread but with the renderman plugin being compatible with 6.3 and probably ce I wanted to check it out. But i ran into a problem.
how did you guys get the rendermanshader plugin to work to assign shaders. when i extracted the plugin to the plugin dir and opened c4d only the export rib comes up in the plugin menu. not the rendermanshader plugin.
Thanks for the help.
BTW if i go in and edit the rib and put my shaders on the lights and geometry i can render with aqsis or pixie just fine. But its not very efficent.

Not all RMan renderers are REYES renderers. As for quality, that isn't such an easy answer. I've tried them all, with a limited experience with PRMan. Air is the fastest amoung the ones you listed, it also does a far better job with motion blur, handling complex large scenes, aliasing, sampling and displacement results equaling PRMan in quality but not in speed.
After Air, my other favorite is Aqsis, feature to feature it equals PRMan and the developers are excellent in fixing bugs, and making improvements, it is also the oldest official RMan open source renderer. The verdict on stability is out on Aqsis at this time, I have easily broken it with large scenes with motion blur. Pixie is very promising and they state that they employ a REYES motion blur ala PRMan, which seems hard to believe considering it is patent and from my test the quality is not up to snuff to PRMan or some of the other RMan, but it looks promising. BMRT is the granddaddy, but also the slowest of all the RMan renderers, it is also not quite up on features, due to it being forced aside by Pixar with Entropy which was giving Pixar a run for its' RMan money. 3Delight is my 3rd favorite RMan renderer, with Deep Shadow support and good quality motion blur, but getting some shaders to work in 3Delight sometimes prove tricky.

Cheers,

I may be wrong but it is my understanding that 3delight is the most compatible with prman when it comes to shaders? Not quite up to date when it comes to features though when compared to other renderman renders.
Havent tried air but aqsis does seem alot more stable then pixie but when it doesnt crash pixie does seem faster. Havent tested fully but i dont think pixie supports c4d's hypernurbs. It crashes when i try and render an exported rib that has a hypernurbs node in the scene. Aqsis on the other hand has no problem with it. But it may be just me doing something wrong.

Daz3d are realeasing a new app called Daz Studio, it uses 3Delight as it's renderer and should make it MUCH easier to use. I don't know if it will import .ribs though. It's due to be released in the next couple of months and the base version will be free. www.daz3d.com

They are also developing plugs to integrate with Lightwave and Max so one for Cinema is a posiibility for the future. - Baz

ya if you go to the website it says when the latest update was applied. I think it was last month.
but he seems like a quick responding guy. i emailed him about the shader plugin and he emailed me within a day.
