As far as I know, Canopus boxes are not OHCI-compliant (just like Avid's Mojo boxes). They use their own drivers and thus will not be usable with AE.

What would be a OHCI-compliant solution which would work with AE CS3/4 ?

Well, any camera/device that you can use in Windows Movie Maker. ;-) That's still theoretical, though, and will largely depend on whether your FireWire port is natively visible in the device manager or not, regarding of it's inactive/active state. It's really impossible to provide a satisfying answer, as even a different motherboard can make or break the stuff. The best advise therefore is to borrow the equipment and test or at least have a good return policy with your reseller, so you don#t end up with useless equipment...

Thanks for the precise answer! :}
Are the better preview options are there? Llike in the form of dedicated cards which don't cost an arm and a leg.

Yes, of course. Since even Apple and Sony are dropping it, FireWire will be dead in the water soon, anyway. If you are serious, you should consider one of Blackmagic's boards like the Decklink SD or Intensity models or AJA's Kona/Xena line. It really depends, though. I for one have two big standard computer screens with calibration and I consider the preview sufficient, as I do mostly synthetic stuff and the pieces are short. I'd only extend my arsenal, if it was more VFX centric, requiring color correction previews, or I had longer pieces for roundtripping between AE, Premiere and Encore. Anyway, 300 bucks is quite a reasonable price, so I might put one such card in my next computer anyways, regardless how much I will or will not use it...

Thanks for the hints. The Blackmagic Intensity boards with the HDMI connectivity look really interesting. I think that's the way to go. Also a good way to write of that large 1080 screen 8)))).
