Title: Almasjed, The Mosque
Name: Ali Almasabi
Country: USA
Software: BodyPaint, Digital Fusion, Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, Renderman

Hello All,
I just graduated from the University of Colorado Denver with a Bachelor of Fine Arts emphasis on 3D Graphics and Animation and a minor in Multimedia and Motion Graphics. Here I posted a CG video piece called Almasjed. I'm working on my reel right now and looking for a job ;).

Almasjed -meaning the Mosque in Arabic- is a humble attempt inspired by Arabic and Islamic Art and Architecture from all around the world. The Arts that always captivates me for their highly detailed designs and patterns that cover everything from clothes to paintings to furniture to buildings. Mosques are called the houses of God. They are sacred and spiritual places, lots of art work and detail are put into making and maintaining them. People go there to pray and seek peace and get mesmerized by the beautiful art.

The making of Almasjed
• All modeling, shading, and cameras were done in Maya2008.
• Lighting was done also in Maya. I made four different light Rigs (day, night, inside and outside) plus the MentalRay PartiVolume fog light Rigs.
• Digital hand paintings and image manipulations were done in PhotoshopCS3 and BodyPaint3D for texturing. I have more than 153 different texture maps compiled in 36 Photoshop files including: color maps, specular maps, transparency, displacements, bump, and incandescence.
• Rendering was done in both RenderMan and MentalRay with different passes such as: Beauty pass, Zdepth, Specular, Diffuse, Shadows, Fog, and Ambient Occlusion. The average rendering time was from 20 to 150 minutes per frame.
• All were composited in 19 different compositions using Fusion5.2 and Adobe Premiere Pro.

I spent countless nights making Almasjed and with out those people who supported me I would have never made it. Thank you all.

Good job

Modeling and texturing are great ..

but i think camera movement needs reconsideration ..

there are some long shots focusing on some objects that should be shorter..

but overall good work

Like you, I am a great admirer of Islamic Art and Architecture. The attention to detail in all artistic Islamic creations, especially monuments, is mind boggling.
The texturing work you have done here is exemplary.I think it lives up well to the original inspiration. The modeling is good too as is the lighting.

One thing that bugs me, though. It is hard to notice this in the video, but in the still image you have provided, the Depth of Field is not quite right. This being a daylight image with a wide to normal lens (from what I can tell), you wouldn't achieve that kind of blurring in the distance, I think. Anyhow, the video is fine and the shot is short enough to escape notice, but as a still image, it kind of bugs me.

But GREAT work overall! I can see all the hard work you put into it. Keep it up!

Beautiful presentation! I really liked how the music brought out the details and flowed with the movement of the camera. This piece is just gushing with detail, I can't even imagine how long that took to texture!

So when is UbiSoft gonna hire you for the new Prince of Persia, eh?

Great work! I really love the texturing work that you did. The lighting is a little dark in the overhangs, but it ads to the mood of the piece. Well done.

The texturing is incredible and so detailed, the models look clean and the lighting is superb! Okay, so I'm a little biased being a classmate and a friend.

However, what most people can't see from this is how fast of a texturing artist Ali is, there's so much detail and Ali always finishes textures ahead of the deadline and it's what makes him so valuable.

The camera work has come a very long way too, the pacing might be a little slow but I think its effective for showing off his environment.

WOW. Thats such an incredible work especially considering that it is a student work. i love your textures they are detailed and mesmerizing. I have been always fascinated but the Arabic and Islamic arts and ur piece is just a good representation to those beautiful arts.
I don't know but personally i liked ur camera movements especially ur first shot. i think they work good in ur video and with the music u put. the lighting is awsome too, i like how u faded from day to night outside and back to day inside.
I agree with blinnlambert that it is just gushingwith detail. I watched it about 10 times so i can take it all in. I also agree with ChrisWhite that how come this hasn't been plugged yet.
It is such an inspirational piece for young CG students like myself.
I cant wait to see ur reel man and I wish u luck in ur job hunting which i think u ll do just fine.
keep up the good work.

This work is amazing! The textures are so detailed! The colors are very well thought out and compliment each other very well. I love you opening shot I think it's great and the depth of field really shows off the scale. I know these buildings are just huge in real life and I think you really captured that. I can see how some might find the cameras a bit weird but it's difficult to show off such a huge space in a small amount of time. Hats off to you my man!

Looks great man, I think the color is a bit saturated on the exterior though. You should post some stills from the video of the interior. I think those are some of the best shots. That must have been a huge amount of work to texture all that.
