Hey Guys,
The aim of my entry is to demonstrate what a four stroke engine consists off.
At first I wanted to create a specific engine but after much searching I did not find enough reference of any specific engine so I decided to create the engine parts without the main hull (could change).

The entry could be for a car magazine in an article explaining how car engines are working, various combination's (dual camshaft, inline, V shape) and the many parts that go into them.

Next comes the crankshaft, but that's tomorrow as its kinda late here.

I would love to know what you guys think:thumbsup:

very nice stuff!
Can we see some unsmoothed wires of it?

Cheers

Thanks for the great replies guys.

Here are some wires for you guys, hope it helps, if there is something else I can elaborate on let me know:

Gonna get to work on the Crankshaft, hopefully it'll be done later today.

Wow, heck of a model Maxim. That wireframe really shows just how complex it is.

Wow, that is some nice work!

Looking forward to see some more!

Thanks Wyatt and Zane!

I've created the Crankshaft,Camshaft,Valves and the cylinders upper cap amongst other things.
Here's the update.

This is what I always imagine when people say cutaway, and engine with lots of detail, great work so far

This is looking really nice.
One major thing I’ve noticed is the valves are open at the wrong time (middle cylinders) in the stroke cycle (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a6/4-Stroke-Engine.gif). The valves are always closed when the piston is at top-dead-center. The other thing is the intake and exhaust valves are never opened simultaneously as you have them shown in your mid cylinders.

Also, the crankshaft 'cranks' are aligned wrong. Crank 1 and 4 should be in the opposite position of 2 and 3 (in the middle), at top-dead-bottom.

Hiya, do you think you could be kind enough to tell how you made the material for the two pictures above, would love to know how its made.

Thanks.

Quadart is correct.....

Howstuffworks.com has a nice little animation as well ---> Link (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine1.htm)

Here's a simple animation showing the crank.

Other than that, the modeling is insane. Great work!

Thanks for the awesome replies guys!

I've been sick for the past few days and hardly got anything done, but now that
I am getting better I could get to work on fixing the issues brought up by Bill and Micah.

@ David - I hope this helps:

Hey Guys,
Here is a long over do update, sadly I didn't complete as much as I had hoped due to previous engagements but I will still try to pack everything by tomorrow.

DESCRIPTION
Hey Guys, This is my entry for the latest HMC, I've used 3ds Max to create the model and it took approximately 30 - 50 hours, I've learned a few new handy techniques and approaches to various kinds of shapes and had a great deal of fun in the process.

Thanks everyone, Hope you've enjoyed it!

Nice to look at and I’m sure it was a good modeling exercise, but unfortunately there is quite a bit that does not make mechanical sense here, on a basic level. The major problem is your crank assembly could not make one complete revolution (if animated) without the crank counterweights cutting right through the pistons. Incidentally, the starter and fan should at least swap positions.
