Latest Update: Final Image: Minotaur reborn
12-22-2008, 07:33 PM
In the far future, after been frozen for a long time, the minotaur will reborn. But only some parts of his natural body will survive the centuries in the ice,but thanks to a simbiosys with a formless nano robot projected to find life,he will have a fully functional body, part machine (with some mechanical parts)and part real flesh, the machine part, made conscious by what was left of the minotaur blood and Dna.

More development on the sketch, starting to think a little bit about color...opinions are welcome!

Great idea, its a little sci-fi, not quite steampunk yet... I would research a little more into the Victorian part of steampunk with the idea of things that are steam powered and more mechanical. Keep up the good work though!

Hi pal! great to see you join.
I like the backup story a lot! a minotaur in the snow is something unusual (at least outside of warcraft :D) and quite cool.
I have to agree that you need to make the robotic parts much more mechanic with bold parts and visible joints to be more into the steampunk thing.
I'll love to see more of your concept and how it developes.

This is the first of series of drawings based on photos that I am planing to do,in order to find a nice design for the Minotaur head.Comments and sugestions are welcome.

Lovely head sketch! In the earlier shots, the head feels far too heavy for the rest of the body, like it's just a bull's head grafted onto a man's torso. That may be what you're trying for, but it does feel a bit unbalanced. Oh, and as the others have pointed out, so far this is completely missing the Steampunk theme. Steampunk and Nanotech aren't really remotely the same thing, and it's something you should seriously rethink. But great drawing so far - good luck with the rest!

Thanks for the nice words and comments Michael! I am planning to ad Steam Punk elements and change some other things on the composition as soon as I have the first Rough for the illustration, and hopefully still keep some of the Sci Fi elements,if you can, comeback some time from now to check the rough!

I think it's a really good idea! The other replies say good things and I don't have anything to add. I think your story rocks. Maybe if you can't use nano technology in your story, maybe someone found him and then tried to bring him back to life steampunk style. Like so old hermit who lives in a cave full of steampunk tools to keep him warm. Or like because his research was a little too odd for the people of his time >.>..... I'm sure you will make it work!
And thank you for the encouraging note : )

your sugestions are very good Brigitte! If you come back to my thread some time from now,you will see some of then on the illustration, thanks very much!

Some more head studies, done from photos too. With these references i feel ready to move to anatomy and steampunk studies for the rough illustration.Opinions are welcome!

These sketches are looking great. I like the one by its self, it feels strong.
01-03-2009, 05:54 PM
Some anatomy studies, that I am planning to use for the minotaur right arm and leg.The pose came from the the first concept of the illustration, and the bone and muscle details, from an anatomy book.
01-05-2009, 02:51 PM
Some studies for the body and axe, next post will be the rough for the final illustration.

The pencil rough for my final illustration, opinions are welcome!
01-08-2009, 05:38 PM
Just starting to color,I know I am very late, but I believe I still can finish this on time!
01-08-2009, 10:22 PM
Some color WIP,I would like to give the impression of cold, that's why I am going to use the fog we can see on the pencil rough and maybe more.

I love the background on this, very clean and beautiful, it makes a change from all the fire and smoke in alot of other entries. Its somthing I was aiming at with my still entry too.
The creature I think should have cogs and chains as opposed to cables and transformers, try to think of victorean bikes.
Good luck and Ill keep checking back here in the 3 days we have left. :)
01-09-2009, 10:04 PM
Thanks for the comments Robert, you will see then on the creature!
01-09-2009, 10:45 PM
Yay! You're doing it! : )
01-11-2009, 11:32 AM
Background color work,I have to run to finish this piece on the very little time I have left!
01-12-2009, 06:32 PM
More development on the color, still, a lot of work ahead...
01-12-2009, 06:40 PM
Its looking good, I think the legs look a little small though. Have you thought of the color for the suit yet?
01-13-2009, 11:37 AM
Hi Mathew ! I think I am going to use black for suit, with a little bit of silver in some parts...
Whem it comes to the legs I will makes some tests whem I block then, but you are probably right! Thanks for the comments!
01-14-2009, 11:58 AM
More developmente on the color, still a lot of work ahead!Next steps :ad texture,Lights, details and more!Opinions are welcome.
01-15-2009, 08:40 PM
Another step on the color process!
Due to my late entry I have been unable to participate as much as I would like, having only my spare time to finish this on the extra time(with the original deadline it would have been impossible to me).
I have made the front leg bigger following a good sugestion that I had(just see above),
added details on the axe, shadow on the ground, steam coming out of the back of the creature,
details on arms as seen on the pencil layout.I also changed the position of the right hand.
And this is more or less what I am planning to do to finish it:
Add some fog (subtle) comming out of the nose of the creature.
More Details on the armature.Add texture, make the eyes,a high light on the horns,
More light on the chest( mainly),some blue reflex on the armature and cogs,
specially on the knee(also from a good sugestion I had).
Thanks Robert and Mathew for the nice sugestions!
maybe next post can be my final image...
01-15-2009, 08:47 PM
Keep up the good work! I don't know if you are working some more on the lighting yet or if you are waiting. So maybe some of the yellow light should reflect on certain areas of the head.
That's all I can think of to help.
01-15-2009, 11:29 PM
Yes! the extra time was really, really welcome. Especially since I'm moving this weekend. lol
Good luck again!
01-17-2009, 04:17 PM
Thanks Brigite ,and best of luck for you too!

In the far future, after been frozen for a long time, the Minotaur will reborn.
But only some parts of his natural body will survive the centuries in the ice,
but thanks to a simbiosys with a very small robot projected to find and recover remains of life and technology in dead planets, he will have a fully functional body again, part machine, part real flesh.
