View Full Version : Spline - smooth&round edges?
Quick question:
I have this spline:

After extrude I want this edge (blue one) to be more rounded:

But how?
I converted it to a poly but then I only get one poly on top (no other edges):

With mesh-smooth on it, it looks like that:

I searched around in the 3dsmax forum and found that if I want to smooth a surface I should go with poly-by-poly editing (and extrude around the holes). This means that I have to start again to modell but this time with polys?

Ugh.
Try telling MeshSmooth to work on triangles and not quads/polys.
Not sure how well that will work, though.

first of all you may want to try the bevel modifer insted of extrude with the spline. second, if you want to use meshsmooth on it you should find a little check box in the meshsmooth modifier that says "keep faces convex". click that and it should help. even then it may seem alittle ugly

You do realise that the top and bottom are each 1 giant poly with a serious amount of vertices? Those "caps" are a meshsmoothing nightmare. Use your spline as a guidline to Polymodel the thing with quads, or try to create the bevels on the piece manually without using meshsmmoth. Or spline model with the surface modifier. Unfortunately what you have there will not smooth cleanly, even with a major overhaul.:hmm:
EDIT: Take a look at this thread for a similar problem and some solutions.

another option is to, after you extrude, convert to editable poly and then spend a while creating a structure of faces that will smooth in a better fashion. you should be able to do this my simply dividing up the giant top face into more logical and smaller faces. basically alot of selecting two verts, and then hitting the connect button. a bit of manual poly editing should allow you to bevel some edges and eventually have a mesh that will smooth well :)
Thanks for the tips.
I think I use the "dividing up the cap" method. Hope I can clean up the mesh because there are a lot of small holes in it.

You may also want to reduce the "Iterations" function within the Editable spline prior to extruding it. You may also find it usefull to add a "Turn to Poly" modifier, then collapse the stack. This will get rid of all the 2-sided verts lieing around. Add the polys to the cap, as best you can.
