Odysseus was one of my favourite stories when I was a kid, so I decided to pick this for the challenge. I wanted to create a picture with action and drama and the part when the cyclopses are attacking Odysseus ship is just popped up in my mind...

What you see here is the first complosition sketch. I am pretty much happy with it at this stage, but I am sure it will change a lot during the process.

Crits and comments are more than welcome!

Remarkable work. But I would like to note that there is an HUGE amount of DEAD SPACE on the opposite side of the Robots. It makes the overall image look boring...losing the dynamicness you are trying to create.

I suggest adding few things there...a old city...more robots(small ones) are whatever you think that would suit. Anyway Good Luck on it!

Looking really good so far! It reminds me a bit of Alan Lee's work....

As the above guy said, the dead space is kind of distracting, but it's not so much the fact that there's nothing there- it's that the space is the brightest area, the area with the most contrast- but there's nothing going on there! So our eye is drawn naturally to that area, we discover there's nothing there and we have to force our eyes around a bit more....what you COULD do is put one of the mechs in that area- the one with the rock, maybe? It's a bit late now though. Another suggestion is to darken that area considerably so we look more at the mechs.

Momarkmagic,

The drama and scale of your layout is really good. I like the energy of your strokes. ( I hope you don't polish them out ) I have a tendency to polish my work until it stiffens up.

mrpeace: thanks for the advice - the city is a good idea actually

paperclip: holy shit man! Alan Lee? this is the biggest compliment I have ever got! seriously!
you are absolutely right with the brightest areas. what I will do is bring back the glowing eyes of the robots and add lightsources for the ship as well. I am not sure I have to darken the sky, but maybe a bit...

OZ: cheers buddy!

Mainu: thanks! I am planning to keep it as painterly as I could - hope its gonna work heh... :)

just playing around with the bouncing lights and aerial perspective... still lots of things to do, but the general mood is getting closer.
c&c welcome as always :)

Looking really good! I'd suggest making the snow/ground on top of the cliffs less variegated in color and more solid white- as it is, it seems a bit too 'patterny' everywhere... the area where it goes back into the mountain is very good- bring that smoothness a bit more into the foreground.

I see you made the sky/area in the back darker, the eye finds it much easier to find its way aroudn the picture now!

One of my favorite legend is Homer`s Odyssey - when I was a child I loved especially the part where Odusseus escapes from the island of the cyclopses. It is full with action and drama and I was scared and really interested in the same time in those one-eyed strange giants.
