Rough concept sketch for my Mega Steam Shiva. This is from the story of Shiva where he was meditating on mount Kailash and the god Kamadeva shot him with an arrow of lotus leaves to awaken him. Shiva awakens and kills Kamadeva. This is my first cg challenge. 23 days left- I've got a lot of work to do!

These are my notes on the parts, moving to 3ds max and z brush to start building. thinking about composition changes.

I'm building all my parts in 3ds Max. After some thought i realized this is the first non organic creature I've ever modeled. I'm getting a bit lost in all the parts, trying to design it with functional logical joints so that it would actually move. The deadline is creeping up fast. I need to finish the modeling and move on

Render from yesterday, couldn't upload yesterday morning cause the site was being worked on. adjusting the pose and the lighting. The deadline is looming near. Carving the face in zbrush right now. I'll probably post one more wip before I submit my final(run out of time) image

Wow, Shiva must be pleased with my work cause it just rained hours, minutes, seconds- DAYS- from heaven! I reworked some of the parts after looking at the pose. I was ready just submit a mostly unfinished peice but now I've got some time. wow. I've shifted my work to zbrush for the more organic bits. I'm still new to Zbrush in many ways and sometimes it can be a frustrating beast when it doesn't behave like it should! They definately need to work on the whole subtools bit for the next release but I supose thats a topic for another thread. For all the frustration it can cause there's nothing else like it. This is fun.

not that anyone is paying attention but i forgot to mention- there will be teeth, just haven't done them yet(stupid subtools!!)- just wanted to throw that in there because with out teeth it just look like a very angry old person- "You kids get off my lawn!"

A steam punk Shiva is a wonderfull idea,I really hope you finish this piece on time! If I can give a few sugestions that will be to make the silver parts to look a bit old,but that's on the texture part of the work right? and also to add a few golden details on the edje of the armature, there is some very good reference on this on the film "The league of extraordinary Gentleman" especially on the Nautyllus and on the white car,but there they are silver details...Best of luck for you on final judgment...

Thanks Doug. All the textures were just for a render test and I'll be replacing all of them. That was a stainless steel procedural texture in 3ds Max 2009. I actually plan to go with more bronze looking textures, and definitely want to make them look aged but to save time I'm going to do the majority of that in photoshop. I'm still messing around with some of the parts but in another hour or so I should be onto the pose and the textures. I'll probably post a wip later tonight

Ah, I was wondering if anyone would do something from Hindu mythology. Good luck to you. With the deadline so close, I hope you finish!

Thanks Fabio! Unfortunately I took too much working on design and now I'm having to cram everything else into these last few days- but it's cool cause I know I'm going to be working on this one after the deadline. I want to rig it and animate it.

Software: 3ds max,mental ray,Photoshop,ZBrush
This image is a depiction of a legend of Shiva, a Hindu god - the creator and destroyer of the universe. I read the story that inspired this image here:
http://www.poetryinstone.in/lang/en/2008/11/27/shiva-burns-the-lord-of-love.html.
Ok, so I'll sum it up. to paraphrase- After Shiva's first wife off's her self in the fire Dhaksha because her dad was talking junk about Shiva, Shiva gets the blues and goes up to mount Kailash to meditate for a few centuries. Word gets around that Shiva's on the lamb so a lot of evil demons start actin a fool. One particular naughty demon Taraka goes wild, so wild in fact that Brahma (the other head Hindu God) has to cut a deal with him. Taraka wants immortality but Brahma is like no way dude so Taraka, being quite the clever little demon says he'll settle for invulnerability to anything but a son a of shiva, figuring that Shiva will stay laid up in the cut on mt. K indefinitely. Brahma makes the deal(Brahma only knows why) and from that point Taraka goes completely apedookey and starts running through the gods like a fat man at a buffet. This goes on for a while. Taraka kicks all of the gods out of their own heavens. Finally the gods regroup and start pointing fingers at Brahma like what hell man? -Why did you grant that fool invulnerabillity? But then somebody points out that Shiva can put a beat down on this cat but the problem is he's still chillin on the big K on the low. So they hatch a plot to wake Shiva. They need to wake him and make him fall in love again so he'll snap out his funk and strap a whoopin on Taraka. Apparently Shiva's ex was reborn as the super smokin Parvathi. So they need to get Kama (the hindu version of cupid) to go shoot Shiva with his arrow of lotus pedals to wake him and then make sure that the first thing he sees is Parvathi- but Kama is like "You want me to what? Shoot Shiva?? Uhhh- NO." but the gods are like "Dude, c'mon - you gotta". So Kama goes to Mount Kailash and see's Shiva meditating so deep that even the wind isn't blowin so Kama is like screw this and he bounces. A little while goes by and Taraka is wreckin shop so finally Kama grows a pair, sets up Parvathi on the hill and lets one fly, a lotus petal arrow, and hits Shiva right in the chest. The plan does work- Shiva wakes up and sees sweet Parvathi and falls in love instantly (bount chick a waa waa) but then a second or two passes and Shiva is like hold up- did this mother@#&!^% just shoot me?? And boom- he jumps up (Insert Picture Here) and lops off Kama's head. So my image captures the moment just as lotus pedals fall and Shiva is about to strike.
I used 3ds Max 2009, Zbrush 3.1 and Photoshop. I designed and built Shiva with rigging in mind and plan to animate him down the line. As you can see i went to town with the new procedural metal textures in max 09 because time was a factor and it saved me a lot of uv mapping. Before I set up the rig I'm going to revamp some parts and completely retexture.
Feedback, Please! Let me know what you think!

Thanks Lah - sorry about the delayed response but i was with out internet for a few days out of town, out in the sticks. I spent a lot of time on the arm joints. You only really see a hint of them in this composition. but many of the details you don't see. I'll probably post multiple views of this in my portfolio soon, after i rework some bits.
