My vote goes for Maxya Pro too. Great for Mel and Python!

Maxya ist my favourite, too. Unfrotunately, there isn't a Linux version available. What editor do you recommend for Linux?

i use jedit on linux. You can port it so its connected to maya when running commands.

im trying to find one for macs, w/the features like crimson have. I'm using textwrangler but I'm sure what to look for to make it work for mel scripting. I'm very knew to it. But by watching the gnomon intro to mel tutorials they suggested to use external script editors. It would help if it was free or at a very low cost. Thanks to whoever responds.

I can gush for hours and hours about Textmate for the Mac for any type of development work. There's a bundle that does MEL syntax highlighting and also has a send to Maya/script editor command.

For what it's worth I was a hardcore BBEdit fan for the longest time, but the elegance of some of the hinting/auto-procedure stuff just rocks my world.

I really love using maxya, it's fantastic.

I'm starting work soon and I have a fishy feeling I'll be on a Linux box, so no maxya for me :(

Definitely agree. So frustrating to deal with editors that take forever to open, and are hugely bloated. Absolutely love TextMate.

Have you guys been able to get TextMate + MEL plugin working on OSX Leopard 10.5.8 & Maya 2011?

Every time I submit a command from TextMate, it sends Maya into an infinite loop and prints "Syntax Error" redundantly. I have to force close Maya to break it.

Hi there,

I was reading through this post a while ago and decided to buy Maxya from http://www.tarzworkshop.com/

I really like this editor but it seems that he stopped development for it due to the Maya QT switch.

Digimation also dropped their MELStudio. It's still on their website but they will not update to Maya 2011 for the same reason Maxya seems died...

Can someone give a short list of workable MEL editors they use that's more recent than a lot of leads in this topic?

My thinking goes toward Eclipse. But then again Eclipse is tedious to install and maintain ( I used it on a web project a couple of years back). Notepad++ has MEL syntax highlighting but no code completion or any other fancy tools.

The script editor inside Maya ain't cutting it for me either (code completion, documentation linking etc.)

Many Thanks

Alex

I once installed Eclipse as well but it smashed me with stuff I don't need and it was horrible to find anything.

I used to be a hardcore MelStudio fan! Max Liani was working on v2. But seems he got into lots of other work. So he obviously discontinued it and only did minor Maya-Version updates for Digimation. Thats was very very sad. For me MelStudio had way the best look and most important: feel I ever experienced!

That was one issue I had with Maxya. Kursat was so kind to grant me beta access but I just didn't dig it :(

Now I'm with notepad++. Its almost nice. Code completion works for mel. But not so good with py. For that I hacked some Autohotkey-stuff around it to make it comfortable... But its still not really integrated.

Would be nice if someone could assemble a working Eclipse package..

but yea.. I actually planned to compile a version of my Maya stuff too.. not there yet. but almost :D

Shameless repost from creativecrash:

Can't get MayaEditor plugin for Eclipse loaded.

Sorry for the noob question. I have Eclipse 3.6.1 x64 on XP 64 running with jre1.5.0_22. Eclipse is loading fine. So I'm trying to get the plugin to load from the plugin directory. com.myplugin.eclipseMayaEditor_1.0.0.jar

There is no evidence of this plugin loading. No prefs, no nothing in Eclipse. So I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any advise? email if you prefer: jdrouse at g mail

I've tried some older versions of Eclipse. 3.5, 3.2, no dice.

Thanks in advance! Would really love to not work in the script editor!

P.S. I'm basically following these exact instructions:
Instructions Set 1:
http://christianakesson.com/ArtSite/Blog/Entries/2010/11/13_Making_Eclipse_Soar.html

Instruction Set 2:

If you're on OS X and want to have access to common code snippets just while in Maya, check out Codebox. It puts a little codebar in your menu bar and pastes the contents in when you select them.

Otherwise, I use BBEdit with the MEL reference from the MEL for Maya Animators page

Thanks, however I'm not on OSX. I really want the full blown awesomeness that Eclipse can provide. This is really the most frustrating thing I've tried to get going so far in 2011!!!

I feel your pain...
For eclipse there is a plugin available called Eclipse Monkey, this along with Python Monkey allows you to script your own macros for eclipse.I use this instead of the creative crash plugin for sending code to Maya, getting docs based on selection etc...

Check it out:

Too much pages, so I apologize if it's already posted, but Komodo Edit (http://www.activestate.com/komodo-edit) is really cool, it has a MEL extension with syntax highlighting and completion:

Komodo is my favorite , especially for python.

For Python I found Pyscripter very useful and for Mel Maxya
Pyscripter website (http://code.google.com/p/pyscripter/)

Pyscripter require to install python 32.
But if you work with 64 version and have some additional modules installed , you can't use shell.

One thing i don't like about komodo is that it don't display full docstring from methods.
Maybe it can be enabled somehow?

So i tested wingide recently and i think it is really good.
It is userfriendly , but still it has "all" features like komodo or eclipse.

It have some problems with ui , for example you must run windows aero theme , or you will have "ghosting" windows , but other things are fine , so far.

Komodo is the great IDE. Just one thing. How to set highlighting simmilar objects, I mean if I have one variable, repeated few times and I select/highlight it, others should highlight to, like in Notepad++.

commandPort removed due to unstability.
Mel Command and command parameters updated.

Is it possible to send python commands from Maxya to Maya?

hcetiner

yes :
Maxya Settings>Python>Python Connection
must be set to "Use Maya"

I use a pimped version of gvim, with ctags, taglist, syntax hightlighting for mel and python, auto complete for mel and python. It's fast, free, great :)

You want mel/python IDE for Maya? Maxya beats ALL!!!

currently using Maxya LE 4.5.0.3. Install, and all you need is to put a plugin into Maya plugins folder, enable the plugin and Maya and it's good to go!

http://www.tarzmedia.com/Software/Maxya/Review_Maxya.aspx

in case they change the link again, you should just go www.tarzmedia.com

O, and downloading from the main site is a total pain in the ass. Keeps getting interrupted. Here's a torrent link:

http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7100720/Maxya_Mel_Python_Scripter_Learning_Edition_v4.5.3.0

If you are more to python, you should consider eclipse... it's a lot more heavier but doesn't cost you a cent except a bit of setup

Notepad++
It's a source code editor.
Probably not the best, but it covers my needs.

I've been using Charcoal Editor for the past several weeks now. I still use Eclipse from time-to-time, but I find the working directly in Maya streamlines my workflow.

Yes I agree. I've started using it and it is very nice tool. Integrated in Maya.

Thanks for posting about Charcoal Editor, I just installed it. I really like it. I was using XCode on the mac, just for python and I when I was scripting every day, I used to use jEdit, which was such a pain to get all the plugins installed and hooked up to Maya. Thanks!

Notepad++ is the best.
