View Full Version : CHARACTER - Zombie Pirate
KazuyaMochu 06-21-2003, 05:06 PM Hey guys,
I just came up with this drawing on a very long train trip. hado to get my self entertained with something. good thing theres allways a pencil and a sheet of paper around!
I whent for a character that I could latter put in some sort of game, or lowpoli 3dmodel. I try to add detail and gadgets to him... but I'm not very good at that (yet... I hope!)
so... tell me what you think!

slightly unfortunate pose dont make his hands the focal point.

yeah he has style :) but he doesnt look like a zombie to me, he looks more like an evil warrior but not an undead one.
Inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean: The curse of the black Pearl ? :D
Anyway.. it's looking pretty good, but I think his skin and clothes could be damaged bit more.. The skin of a zombie has gone rotten and so damaged :)
Keep it up

Sorry, I actually don't know any thing about pirates... well, I think I named this one a pirate, because of the boots and the cape... It's one of thoes drawings that come out when you're drawing it.
so... Also the damaged skin, yes, I agree, but I hope to put that in, when I color it. I hope! Also I'll too make him look a little more undead.
CharlieBrown, didn't quite get all of your post... sorry:shrug:
Well, Thanks every one for the comments

Even he is not a zombie to me, its' a great character!!well done!
:bounce:  :bounce:
Maybe he needs some more blood and all that stuff in his face to get him more zombie-like.
But why make him a zombie, this character is finished, it only needs colors.:arteest:
I am really looking forward to see the result!

well... I confess! when I started doing this, I had no idea what it would come out as... So at first I tried to make a "zombie like" face. Blank eyes, dirty hair, skinny face... So after a while, it started to look nice. So I decided to do the rest. You can see I wasn't going for a body drawing, because the front leg didn't fit in the sheet...
oh well, then I just started adding detail, and I felt like it could go for a kind of pirate, from a ghost ship. that's when I came up with the idea of a zombie pirate. It's more like a "Undead" kind of guy.
But I take any sugestion as to the name or title, for this character.
I had some friends say it was a barbarian...

hi Kazuya Mochu,
i think its coming along great, when your done maybe i would do some color corrections? i think if you were to do it like in a night time lighting could be very neat. but im sure you are already set on your mood. that is just what i would do, it is looking really great though your very good at painting, can you tell me your method? like what brushes you like using and the settings? im still brand new to painting in PS.

Kazuya, youve got a really great style. Its nice to see how other people work. I am really amazed at the level of detail youve gone to without doing the rest of the character first. My only recommendation would be on the pose you drew. I would change the right leg a little. Maybe straighten it out and make it go at an angle. Just a suggestion.
So far so good, I look forward to more updates. :)

That's a very nice one Kazuya!!!
About the right foot (his left one): I think it perhaps is too thick. You may just make it a little thinner in order to give him more shape or so. The height or size of the foot is ok!
I really look forward to see him finished textured. What about the colors, will he stay brownish? Anyway it's already looking really plastical and 3dimensional, keep it up! Didn't know you draw as good as you model!

nice one so far...well imho i think it's his right foot that seems off .... i took your pic to show you what i think makes it look off... the yellow one is what the image looks to me for now and the red one is what it should look like imo (don't mind those reddies in his legs - they're just for orientation)....
hope this helps

KazuyaMochu
07-01-2003, 12:58 PM
the ankle! that's it! cool. yeah, it does look a bit big.
gonna change it!
schmu_20mol, yeah the front foot is lame. I think that it is also helping the other foot to look wrong.
rest of you guys, thanks! that's very motivating! I hope to post some more stuff today. (latter)
ok, I'm going now.
thanks again!
Kazuya Mochu
Wow. Cool Character.
The way you paint this will determine if its a zombie or barbarian.
Looking good.
There seems to be an excesive amount of cloth bunched up on the pants of his lower left leg .(compared to the right).?????
Hope to see an update soon!
KazuyaMochu
07-02-2003, 07:23 PM
No much, just some color separation (helps me to work!)
and I started on the cape, but I think the shape is wrong. I was going for a rain cover cape. I wanted it to bend to the wind, as much as the hair, and the sword. I wanted to aligne then all. but I think I'll have to change the cape.
so, I'll keep showing.
btw, the cape's coloring is just very early, don't tell me it looks unfinished! :)

kaz, i was thinking for they eyes. maybe you could do like a no iris look to them. not like all white. but maybe like "not seeing" i dont know if that makes sense. cause pure white eyes is overdone, but i think if he had like iris in his eyes but almost not noticiable i think that could give him a nice undead/not there look. hmmm i cant explain anymore, its your picture, but if i had that iw ould do something like that i think. just a idea. ciao

hey great work:)
my only gripe about this is the positioning of his hands and the sword. its kind of like between his legs...
i love the way you rendered the cape:thumbsup:
Nice rendering on the cape and sword.
Have you had a cance to do any more work on this?

I really like it, but what somehow catched my eye is that you use the same way of drawing highlight on every surface, means that the robe, the skin, the trousers and the boots are highlightet the very same way, which gives the whole thing maybe a too artifistic look. Remember that every surface has it's very own way of reflecting light. Maybe try to fix this a little here and there.
Anyways I really like this one, keep it up I'm already very excited about the finished version ;)

08-12-2003, 05:06 AM
I agree with cANt about highlights, maybe one more light source ( blue or somethin')...just my two cents
By the way, that's a strange way to hold a sword...and this one seems really heavy for him but looks so small for us...maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I see so far...
Anyways, keep it up Kazuya, it's goin' to be a really great piece!
KazuyaMochu
08-12-2003, 11:39 AM
well, you guys could be more correct, but 'im still trying to get all the lights and shadows here and there. I think I'll go back to that when I'm done shading. also Iwas allready thinking of a back light, like a moon light, than you can see on the background.
I hope I can get them there!
thanks

Kazuya,
Look great.. could you explain a little bit about how you mix and blend colors to shape the msucles and such?
KazuyaMochu
10-13-2003, 04:11 PM
i use the smudge tool. I just pick a color, or the burn/dodge tool, and place the high light. than I smudge it to create the lighted area.
this is done with a dark background color. You may want to add some even darker areas, but I'm not to sure if this is correcte every time. I mean, I shouldn't even be tipping you off, as I'm no very experieced at ilustration. I usualy make game textures.
this one is acctually comming out nice, If I may brag.
ok, any thing else, say so.

p.s. Thank you for following this thread
nice global rendering!
it's maybe a little too dark but i guess that's what you wanted to do
it reminds me the warland comics book
i especially love the pants.....
nice piece of art, well done

i would tone down the black in the background, too much contrast back there. use atmospheric perspective a little bit, and lighten it to a dark gray (maybe 70% at the most).
i might also sharpen the edges on the sword that are closest to the viewer.

hum, the "zombie" came out as a big problem I gess.
I think it all has to do with each one's perception of zombie.
When I made this drwaing at first, pirates of the caribean was not out yet.
now, that most people have seen it, they all expect to see pirates of the carebean on may drawing.
Gess if I did make it look like pirates of the caribean every one would go like: "bah, thats a rip off. Lammer"
so, as to me, a zombie is someone dead that still beahaves as living. Or some one alive (in a certain way), shoing some signs of death. But one thing I put in all zombies. blank eyes.
ok, so now I have greyed body, wrecked cape and some blood stains, and also a big piece of with cloth sorrounding the stomack area.
maybe a should have called him Bill. or Khumarth, or Gurluth. that's be cool!
how did the pirats of t he carebean walked? with no muscles? no tendons... talking with no vocal cords...
I gess my zombie should have stayed barried a couple more decades, right?
why couldn't he be hurt just an hour before? But one thing is right about the pirates of the carebean! they did not all wear the same clothing. So I gess I can get away with this blue pants
so that's it. This is my opinion on what's a zombie or not, and why I think you should not take the word zombie so directlly.

That is good drawing, and yes there is something off with the pose and its not the leg dude, like it was said kind of unfortunate pose. (i guess it can be overlooked anywayI suppose its just immature ignoramuses like me who've got nothing better to crit at. But really inspiring work, great drawing and paint skills you got there.
p.s as for the title I think undead will do.

Your work is great, Kazuya, i dont care if this is zombie pirate, or pirate zombie. Ive watched that work from beginning, and it gives me much /im new in digital painting but not in drawing itself/. I would like to thank you for sharing your process of painting, and im looking forward to see finished, full textured piece.

just thought that if he is both a zombie and a pirate he may perhaps need a few injuries or scars, unless he died from a ruptured aprendix or something.
i hope that is a cutlass he is holding and not a huge steel shlong.
it looks really great, but as it is now the colour of the skin against the backdrop make me want to vommit.

Kazuya, i would like to ask you - what is original/work size of the image?
Thank you!

I scanned in, and it was something around 700x1000
a bit small for painting... I gess

Thanks, Kazuya, even on these pixels your work looks great. btw. im working most of time on 2500x2000 and higher, but i think that good work didnt depends on pixels, it depends on artist! :)

anyway, is very good work !

if he's a zombie, shouldn't the skin be somewhat a greenish or blueish white with disgusting ooze all over? maybe with some bones showing in some parts? and for a zombie those clothes are really clean..
anyways, great painting.. i was only nitpicking on the title.. heheh.. i really like your skin tone.. it really brings up the muscles..
