View Full Version : What's the best way to provide notes in a scene?
sketchbook 12-19-2008, 10:00 PM Never had to do this, but from time to time it would be very helpful.
is there an object that you can apply notes to?
thanks!

You can apply notes to any object, just add a string userdata, you can even drag & drop it into the HUD to show up there. Or you could just use Doodle to draw in annotations in viewport (which is what it's for), and use it's notes area to write down specifics. In XPresso you have remarks on every node and a special Remark node that will display it's "Comment" field in the actual node network...

If you're working with 32 bit, there's Collietools.

There's a tag that can be added to any object that allows notes in a field. Somebody else had a plugin like that too, but I can't remember who it was.

With V11 you have the mega ultra cool DOODLE object....
I LOVE doodle... I use it for a lot of things now that I have it.
Story board, annotations, roughing out animation, copy animation from life footage...

Just add a Null-Object and put your notes as the name of the Null. Using Nulls named "----------" you can also get very very nice seperator lines in your ObjectManager:

The good news about Commentator is that it works in 64 bit. (I believe it's done in COFFEE). The bad news is that when you select the tag, the notes don't show up in the Attribute Editor, you've got to double-click the tag to open a window that has the note in it.
I'm still looking for a tag solution that works in 64 bit.

Um, like I said, just add a String user-data to any tag or object at all, set it's interface to multiline string and go. I would recommend checking out Doodle though, the whole point of it is annotations (and it has notes in there) that can also be linked to speciic frames/times in a project.

Per-Anders,
Thanks for that tip. Never knew that.

For object-independent notes, User Data can be added to a viewport in its AM settings.

Yeah, you *can* do that with a string, but I still like tags better. If I want to add the field with userdata, it's 4 steps:
1) Open userdata panel for selected object
2) Change data type to string
3) Change interface to Multi Line String
4) hit OK
With a tag, it's one step. Add the tag to the object. So yes it's nice that the option exists, but I'd still like a tag system. In addition, you have to highlight the userdata button to see what the note is, whereas with a tag, as soon as it's selected you can read the note. A tag can also be copied to other objects.

Then use a "dead" tag, such as a COFFEE tag (no code in it) and do the multi string thing
on it. Set the settings you need/like (colors, under what circumstances it should
be hilighted etc.)
Name it and drag into the content browser.
Pretty convenient:)
