View Full Version : How long do i have ?
Wardile 06-21-2003, 02:11 PM Hallo. Im new here. I was just wondering how long or shall i say, how far must i still go in CG world.
I dont have the cash for a school so im doing it at home with online help. Ive done some good stuff but nothing in comparsin with what i see here. Ive been doing 3-D for 8 Months now.
I can model box, poly and spline.
Can rig characters and animate them.
Can map and texture anything aswell as light.
Yes i need to learn alot more finer techniques but im curios how long does a CG school take to graduate from.
I wish i could show you some work but my webhosts are free and therefore not worth anything. WAIT... i rememberd a link of my creature.
PLease inform me if im progressing good or really bad.
Thank you for your time.

Hmmm...wrong section for posting pictures I'm afraid.:shame:
I think you have what it takes. What you need is to find some really excellent books on CG, animation etc and put together a killer demo-reel.
BTW, since yesterday I've been studying the ED-209 sequence from Robocop. I've tried to emulate the animation in TrueSpace...lets just say that I've learn't a trick or two!
So, I'd recommend you do that for your next project - for the sake of a little experience!

On that picture, i would say that you would allready be able to work freelance. If you can churn that sort of quality out in a few days. Based on what my friends have done freelance you will be ok for small contracts untill you have enough exp to do better stuff faster.
Go as far as you want, if you want to be lead mod or animator then go for it. but dont try to be good at every aspect of CG, because ppl who specilise will beat you.
Just have fun!

Hey there, great to see another South African here on CG Talk
That model isn't half bad :) The texturing looks a bit procedural, but that's ok, since you haven't been doing 3D for too long yet, and probably haven't had time to really get into texturing yet.
It's a shame that you cannot afford to go to school... then again, there are only a few decent 3D courses in SA anyway... is it not possible to get a student loan though?
I am going to move this thread to the WIP forum, as we generally do not allow threads like this here in General Discussions.

Hey Wardile, I really like the textures you put ont his beast compared with last time I saw it. Nice improvement. Just keep practicing and try not to worry too much about "time" and try to have fun enhancing your skills. :)

You know the phrase a watched pot never boils well the same applies when asking questions like this.
You are obviously very young so tak einto account that your interests my changed or fate will simply put your where you want to be.
In the meantime enjoy yourself.. go outside often and wonder about the world isntea do the computer.. there will be plenty of time for that.
Most graduate degrees take four years although depending ont he school you could take a lifetime and never actually finsih your degree. Masters degree programs usually take two years after you have gotten a bachelors degree.
You can go to specialized school sand in a shorter period of time learn a specific program but you receive no degree.
Either way it will be your reel in most cases that will get you work. Although if you go more into programming fdegrees seem to say alot more and are generally required to get work.

Even 20 is still pretty young :)
As for how far you still have to go, you can go on indefinitely, and will still never stop learning. Even the top guys at Weta, ILM, Digital Domain and the rest are probably still learning new things all the time.
It's just a matter of working consistently hard, and ensuring that you can tackle anything that is handed to you.
Since you are interested in doing this as a career, have you considered putting together a show reel and sending it to a few local studios? Joburg and Cape Town both have a few animation houses that you could send a reel too. Some of these companies will take on people who show potential, and will train you further while you work for them.

Hmm this model is actualy not bad, the rendering could use some help but thats just diffrent styles and such... things like GI and FG help even the lighting, if that isn't something you can do (not afford ect...) you can fake it with an ambient and some directional lighting.
For your Actual geometry I would suggest looking at some anitomical books and learn how bone structures form and joins are built, just to get the right look and feel of joints.
btw guys, I'm only 16, 17 in september, I'm VERY young, but i've got a "natural" talent for art, I just lack any formal training so my skills are quite varied and not really fine tuned to any area, so at times I can draw with amazing quality, or it looks like a 5 year old's work, sometimes I can model extreamly well, or map with inspiration, or other times i can't do anything but paint textures! Its kinda crappy as far as reliablity goes, but It lets me have a taste of everything. But On top of it all I can't not be doing something, so I am always picking up on something when i'm working.
