Greets... I'm working on getting this shot completed by the end of the month, and I'm most of the way there. I figured that I was reaching that point where fresh perspectives from the community might give it the extra boost every project can use.

The idea is that the jumpjet is coming in for a landing during a fairly heavy downpour. A sunbeam happens to break through a crack in the cloud cover, illuminating the scene just as the jumpjet is negotiating the final approach. While it is raining heavily, it is not very windy. The location is a scientific output on a new planet, and in an effort to minimize any disturbance of the natural order being studied, the entire base is up on platforms in the treetops.

Don't mind the comp error with the flares etc. the'll be fixed.

I would love ideas and suggestions on how to do realistic rain in post/layers, so that it doesn't simply look stuck on, as this does.

I'll post more as it develops over the weekend so you guys have more to go on.

hey Jester,

ok, feedback, yeah.

nice image, I like most of it over all
SHip is sweet, and the the over all image. I would like to see some landing lights off the bottom of the ship illuminating the tarmack a bit,

ground fog maybe a bit, towards the edge of the pad and the forest.

oh yeah, landing gear would be nice as well, otherwise it might be a bit rough

along with the above, could you do somthing about the treeline on the left. It just looks really fake to me, try to add a little depth to it, light it up a bit better instead of just the silluete.

... unless an epiphany turns up in the crits here, this will be in the reel this weekend.

Thanks all!

jets that push the plane up and down, they would prolly create ALOT of steam.

PLUST the lights, wouldn't they bounce of the rain cuaseing a more streaked effect to the "light cast" ?? Also rain tends to shorten the distance light travels. giving a weird effect to everthing.

i think the jet would cause a lot of downwards pressure, which would blow all that foliage around.

Bitmap... SPOT ON idea about the rain being lit by the lights. I just added that in AfterEffects by and it adds nicely to the effect.

As for your and Dominichi's comments about the wind and steam, I'm forgoing the steam for now, in part because at the time I set this up I lacked the knowledge on how to handle steam more efficiently (specifically, thick steam reflected in the rainwater and lit by the sun). I've come too far with this shot to retrofit it that extensively (even though I would definitely do it differently, now that I know about Matte Object!); I need this to be done. The rain effects and the use of my HDRI light hack were the primary motivation for it, and they went off without a hitch.

I may try to mock up the tree displacement in AfterEffects, but if that doesn't work, I'm going to wrap this one up on the weekend. Too many other ideas stuck behind this one!

Thanks for the crits!
