A long time without posting anything for here...
Well, this is the Animator Guy (old WIP, remember?) that I was developing for my short film WIP. The head is finally done.
I was invited to an interview in the only specialized CG magazine here in Brazil: Digital Designer. I sent this image in high definition for the magazine, trying to put it in the cover of edition.

Please, tell me what you think, ok?

Here they are some links for the high resolution image samples:

Incredible detail! I must ask, what size are your maps? I don't think I've seen textures that held up that well so close. Do tell ;) love the lighting also, [Plugged]

looks nice, i love exprressive 3d over "photoreal" attempts any day.
Though I am a little thrown off by his skins rubbery feel.
I'm not sure what program you are using, but some have shaders and utlities availble that assist in how the light hits the material of an object to give it mroe of a surface scattering feel that usally dulls the apperence of a plasiticy feel on organic skins .
Similar to what stahlberg includes to get a softer light blend.
Not to that degree of course..since its certianly an expressive model and should not look totaly " real " but to a small degree to assist in getting rid of that harsh light bouce thats giving the skin such a puppet look.
Just an idea, I think he's cool as hell.

Fantastic Work, but those eye brows bug the hell out me, they look really strange. I would tone down all the hair on the model, he looks old, so such dark thick hair dosn't seem to really fit. Just a thought, excellent detail though.

Render: scanline (my dome light with 64 spots, 1 area and two over exposed omni lights);

Antropus, excellent render! And thanks for the details. I see that you used scanline rendering. Your render times are very similar to my Yafray project render times. I'm using large 3000x3000 maps for the buildings and other environment areas and 2000x2000 maps for my 3d characters. In Blender I am lighting the entire worlds with about 130 soft spotlights parented to a sphere and one sun spotlight. Blenders scanline greatly reduces the rendertilme. It's a good thing that my target renders for most scene will be 640x480 so rendering time is even more reduced. But in the future I will make use larger more time consuming closeups. I aways say work with the largest resolutions that your machine can handle no matter what the situation is.

Again, great render.

Interesting modeling, but is it supposed to look like a plastic head, or are you just starting work on some translucent skin shaders?

Harp
06-22-2003, 04:31 AM
The detail is fantastic.

I'm especially drawn to the eyes which are very photoreal.
The depth of field effect is quite nice as well.
The coarse hair works well and adds to his gruff look.
The scruffy stubble and light chin fuzz is cool.
The little patch of hair on top cracks me up for some reason (like an oasis in the middle of the desert).
My only criticism is that the skin looks a bit like rubbery plastic in the areas that you hit with a rim light.
Have you ever tried using subsurface scattering on skin?
You could also get a similar but less realistic effect by applying a small amount of translucency to the skin surface.

Nice job overall!

Hey guys!!!! THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!
I'm still very busy work in other characters...sorry for delay in reply.

I agree about the skin. It looks a bit like plastic. I'm working in a new skin shader for my characters. Here a sample (with SSS simulation, of course). This scene is rendered with 2 omni lights:

that shader looks a lot more moist, more realistic. it seems like there is a sharp line on his forehead (latest pic) and the highlight on the back of his head seems very bright (like pure white). If you could fix those (probably would go away with more lighting?) then I'd say you're ready for some morph targets at least!!!! Your work is truly inspiring, no doubt.

This is truly inspiring work, Antropus! But I have one particular problem with it - it's way too symmetrical, both in the mesh and in the textures. Ordinarily it wouldn't be so bad, but with this level of detail the symmetry is jarring. Well, it is to me, anyway:shrug:

Can't wait to see this guy in motion, though:thumbsup:
