Hi all, first time posting on the forums

I am into computer modding as a hobby, and I am helping out the community by developing standard models for motherboards. This is so that people with little 3d skill can use a free 3d program and import models to allow them to design a case easily.

Here's my first motherboard, which happens to be mine. An Asus A7N8X Deluxe, modeled in 3ds Max 4.5

I am currently modeling the ZIF socket. This is where the processor goes, for those less comp savvy. It has roughly 600 pin holes. I have been making this model through spline extrusion.

I have the setup for the socket, with all 600ish pin holes. My problem is that when I goto extrude it, my comp takes forever, roughly 5mins, to extrude it, and even then the model is all messed up (faces where faces shouldn't be). I've tried to do a boolean compound, but that usually just causes 3ds to hang until I have to kill it.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to get this as actually polygon instead of a bump map?

EDIT: Yes, I know I should bevel the edges of my slots. I will for my final render for my portfolio, but I want to keep the models semi-low polygon for now.

If you plan on people using gmax as the free 3d program, have you thought of using a displacement map in place of modeling all the holes? Another thing you could try is only extrude 20 or 100 holes at a time. Your system wont have to crunch so many numbers and might not freeze up. Just a thought.

Try boolean, that might work.

What I ended up doing was just placing the processor on top of the socket, so that all the pins are covered
