View Full Version : Substituting Y for Z axis, how?
Wolfzbane 06-21-2003, 01:39 AM Ok, I'm a Lightwave user thinking about trying myself with 3ds max 5... one thing that really confuses me is the Y and Z axis that are inverted. I'm used to have Y for UP and Z for Depth.
Is there any way to customize 3ds so that the Y will be up and Z will be depth?

No. Not afaik.
I belive this springs from MAX's past, ie. MAX comes from something a more oriented towards architects and visualization of buildings and floorplans and whatnot, and since they always design their stuff from the top, the coordinates running along the floor are X and Y. Obviously Z plays a major role in 3D :) so they stuck it where it made sense: the height of a building.
It's just a thing, and you'll get used to it plenty fast I think. Maya has Z as Lightwave does if I'm not entirely mistaken, but I can't say I've experienced that as a particular problem myself.
