Hi everybody, I know this might be a really simple question, but how do you make a displacement map. Is it just the white and black ratio like a bump? Every time I use one things go crazy and out of control, so I'm using them wrong. Do you know of any tutorials that might help explain or just a clear explanation of them?

Hi,

What kind of application are you using? Coincidentally, I found a Cinema 4D Displacement Mapping tutorial on-line today for a project that i am working on but I don't know if it would be useful to you.

Here it is in case you need it: http://www.creativemac.com/2004/02_feb/tutorials/koc4ddisplace040224.htm

Cheers!

I'll check that out thanks, it seems to make sense so far, but I'm using max....but I think in general it would help me no matter what.

Hi ndawson344, I`m no expert on the subject but Im learning to use both Normal maps and Displacement maps, as long as I know you must use an app to edit this map from the geometry modelled on you main app (Max, Maya, Cinema 4D) then work this low poly model on an app like Zbrush or Mudbox in order to add more detail and generate the displacement map.
