Well, part of the problem does actually with the advertising industry, actually. In that they are just way too hesitant to use CG! South Africans fear change, I guess... they are slowly starting to use it now though.
The main problem with CG in this country isn't actually the advertising industry though (that's just a part of it), it's actually the VFX companies themselves - they are run by people who exploit artists and are just out to make money. Well, not all of them, but a lot of the big ones.
But yeah, SA is kinda cool :) It's a really beautiful country, it's just a real shame about the crime

Yes Leigh, I do mean "Republic of South Africa". But you're making the wrong assumption: I'm not a CG-artist, I am CAD-specialist with some knowledge of CG. I am also a civil engineer. But of course, you couldn't know that :-)

Aaah ok, I guess I naturally made the assumption that you were looking for CG work because you are on a CG forum :D
Well, in terms of CAD, there certainly is loads of work here! Even I have done CAD work in the past - my dad runs a company that does a lot of CAD design :)
My housemate also does CAD for a small architecture firm in the city.
I highly recommend Cape Town if you are looking to make the move, it's by far the nicest place in the whole country - the friendliest people and the most beautiful part of the country too!

I guess it's time I make a long-distance call to your dad, then! ;-)
The real problem with this type of stuff - finding a job abroad - is to find the right "entrance". It's already difficult when you're "in" a country. But I'm working on it. So perhaps, in a not too distant future ... :-)
And yes, Cape Town is indeed beautiful! That's actually one of the things that struck me: SA is, in a way, a cross section over the whole of Africa and this in different aspects: cultural, sociological, geological, botanical, economical, ... There's a lot of beauty and a lot of misery at the same time. You find this everywhere else in the world, but in SA it can lead to really sharp contrasts. Or at least that was my impression the last time I was there.
Thanks for replying :-)
Cheers,
BaRa

the cape is fantastic.......avoid joburg like the plague!!! unless you like high murder rates and car jacking...not having to stop at traffic lights etc etc....only problem is you go there and effectively become a bit of an economic refugee in the sense the rand is worth so little out of the country....that said standard of living is pretty hard to beat...

Funnily enough, they don't make Lion lager anymore. It always was a crap beer anyway - whoever thought of adding sugar to beer was a moron. They tried to remarket it for trendy youngsters a few years back but the campaign failed miserably, and now Lion is off the market.

I have to agree with you MoThBall we all pack up and leave given half a chance. Leigh mentioned the lack of a CG industry ,and I think it's probably true to say that if all the talented and experienced artists in exile were to to return the Motherland the standard would be pretty damn befok.
Probably true for any industry really. Ah the irony...For every one of us that leaves that's one less that might start up a successful company that could possibly, in turn, encourage some of us that miss it to return.

Hey thanks mothball.
I've been in contact with someone at BEEPS, she says that I show potential etc, and I might get something there when something becomes avalible. I'd really like to get a job at a big company rather at a lesser known one. I really think that if u work somwhere with a good reputation it'll force u to produce a very high level of work, and I'd really like to improve.
I'm starting to get worried my reel is good for a "just out of college" one, but if I dont get a job soon I dont think its that good for a "been out of college for a while" one.....if u get what I'm sayin.
Have just been phoning any random place I find in the phone book now - mostly just small guys etc
I've signed up for DLF (digital labourers fediration) I think thats a good way to make contacts, although knowing my luck its typicall that the meeting happened just a day before I signed up
