View Full Version : Affect Bones with MD

Is it possible to use motion designer to affect some bones?
I am trying to animate a chain, and would like to use motion designer to create the motion, since I have to have it drop and be pulled through another object. However I don't want it to deform like a rope would, with the links bending.

I thought building a bones structure to control the chain and then let Motion designer figure out the motion would be an effective way to do it, but doesn't seem possible.

Any suggestions?

Someone worked out a way... check Flay and here: http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm

I can't remember how it was done, but it involved a couple of motion modifiers I think

Could you point the way? I always thought it would be great to let MD knock around a chain of bones, and let the bones deform the polys...instead of MD's messy calculations. (turning up the calc res doesn't fix all problems)

Hmm, doesn't seem to be there anymore...

Anyway, dug through my HD and found it.

f_flex-md.zip (http://www.zerogravity.com.au/lw/f_flex-md.zip)

It's been a while since I checked it out, but from memory it uses a point constraint system to attach bones to the vertices of an MD deforming 2 point poly chain...

You can use MDMetaplug with MD to animate a low rez mesha nd then use that to effect a higher rez chain object. I believe MikeRB has an example somewhere. :)

Yes I was just looking at that one and it looks promising. I will likely end up going that way.

I have been experimenting with MD and thinking of trying to do the calculation with solid(ish) body settings. I am thinking that if each link is treated as a solidbody, then it would just work. Any thoughts on this? So far I can't quite seem to nail the proper settings.

Is this what you wanna do?

ask Jen, she can help ya!
:)

whoops, just reread your msg...so bascially you could tweak the chains settings to be Hard Bodies and they will keep their shape!

Well here is a little test:
chaintest.mpg (http://www.3danimationonline.com/chaintest.mpg)

This took waaaay too long to calculate, and I have to do 10 chains like this in the animation. Looks like I will be taking Mike's approach next.

Here are the settings if anyone would like to try to figure out why the chain pulls apart:

Weight: 1
Spring: 2000
Viscosity: 1
Resistance: 1
Parallel-resistance 100%
Back Resistance: 100%
Fixed OFF
SubStructure 100
Shear 100%
Holdstructure: 0
Smoothing: 0
Strech-limit: 100%
Compress Stress 15000%
Shrink: 100%
Self Collision: ON
Single Sided:ON
Collision Detection: ON
Skin thickness: .01
Friction: 0
Bound Force: 1
Action Force: on
Bind Force: 0

and you left the other settings alone right?
pressure effect, fiber structure...things like that?
just wondering, cuz alot of people talking MD on the forums never mention those settings...
all objects have collision and target turned on?

did you read about the chainmail post?
it should help you...http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1603&highlight=chainmail

So look, this thread kind got off track and turned into a MD hardbodies thread...

Getting back to the bones thing -- is there a way to make a 2 pt poly chain swing around and then substute the points with IK goals that move in the way the original points did?

That phone LWS scene didn't really tell me anything -- but I am kind of dumb.

THeres a thread floating around to a link to a tut that Mike RB
did showing how to use MD and BC_Contactpoints to do something like that.

Pressure effect: 0
Fiber Structure: 0

Calculate Res: 100

Gravity: -5.0

You can find the scene

HERE (http://www.3danimationonline.com/Chain.zip)

About the chainmail: yep, that's my next approach. If that doesn't work out, I'll bite the bullet and bone the whole thing and do it by hand. Deadline looming :D
