There are likely several ways of pulling this off, for whatever reason I think I'd graviate towards an animated texture:

Write something on paper, scan it, trace the lines in After Effects or Flash or whatever program you have available that can do animation, render the result to a texture-sequence, and load that into MAX.

Even better would possibly be to record you writing the letters as well, so you can have timing-reference when tracing things.

Then as a final step you match the ballpen to the letters.

The idea behind doing all that is that I'm thinking it'd be hell to literally "write" something by animating the 3d ballpen.
