View Full Version : Serious Xref Trouble
Synkronizer 06-20-2003, 05:44 PM I have a scene with objects Xreffed from another scene.
When i try to render a dialog pops up and says:
The XRef object: "" can not be found within the file: ""
But i didn't even touch the original scene, and when i check the objects are still there, with the same name and all that.
Can anyone help me??
i'm using 3dsmax 5.1

Just a random wild guess here, as I don't think I've encountered that error myself: could it be that the Xref object generates this error because no Render Xref has been defined?
I'm just wondering if perhaps it shows up in the viewport because the XRef object has its Viewport settings properly set, but it fails to render because its Render settings are incorrect?
Ah, idunno, worst case scenario: merge the ****er in, and avoid the issue altogether :).

Well, i xreffed using the xref dialog box, and there i set another object as a proxy, a copy of the original but with a multires modifier on it.
Yesterday when i finished working, i could render my scene without any problem. Today i opened the same scene and tried to render, and i encountered the error.
That's the strange part, i've been working on the scene for a week now, without errors, and then suddenly the objects disappeared..... I haven't opened the original scene with the objects since i finished them. (well, actually i did to check if the objects were still there)
I can update the xref scene, point max to the right scene, and select the right objects, and still i can't render them....
I am reluctant to merge them into the scene cause they are high-poly trees and they would considerably slow down my scene, and there isn't any animation yet

Gaggle: just out of curiosity: do you use manual or auto update for the xrefs?

eh, idunno, I've had it on in the past, and I've had it off. Haven't mattered much I don't think.
Does AutoUpdate update the Xrefs before rendering? If so, and if you have it on, that sounds like a possible explanation for your errors.
I hear you on the Xref-merging thing, clearly you're Xref'ing because the objects should be in a seperate scene.. still, annoying unexplainable bugs needs to be circumvented any way possible when you're on a deadline, as long as you hide the trees you should be relativly okay even if you do end up merging them in. The scene will take longer to load, but the viewport-speed ought to remain. Make the dummy-trees nonrenderable, and hit the Render Hidden in the render-globals, and you could get a semi-Xref feeling going.
Obviously if you can solve the problem somehow that wouldn't suck.. is the file across a network? Maybe try copying it locally and see if it has anything to do with that.. ah idunno, I'm just guessing wildely there.

well, about the update, i've always had auto off.
Now i've turned it on, and i got all my trees back.
This is really weird, since i've been working on my scene for a week before the problem appeared!!!!
All my files are on the same computer, located in the 3dsmax folders.
If it happens again, i'll merge and hide them, like you suggested.
Thanks

Well, installling the service pack 1 seemed to do the trick!
But anyway, thanks for your suggestions, they will help me with future problems!!
