Title: Reindeer in snow
Name: Wayne Troskie
Country: South Africa
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush
Started out as a poser size and finally ended up as a 6 meter banner! the image was created using Maya, Z and Photoshop! Here's a rough process! first the deer was modelled in Maya, I have lots of stuff if you guys want to see the process! then the model was taken into Zbrush for displacement! body, horns ect... using photoshop for the texture painting! the snow landscape was created in Maya using procedural texturing and fine tuning with the new Mental ray IPR in Maya 2009! the Maya scene was so huge about 1.5 Gig's I had to render in pieces! the final passes was comped into Photoshop! and snow was painted into the reindeer and then final grading! final image took about 3 weeks! Cheers!

Very nice, but that smoke from nose have too much density(it's like smoke)... and there are no fur on them. Winter mood you did well!:)

Thanks for the feedback! well for the smoke part, you right about that, the client wanted smoke! lol keen eye's there! for the fur, I did a couple of renders with fur and the deer's lost a lot of definition so It was the final decision to go with that look! might add a bit of hair later on! some more test's and renders!

santa certainly put on a lot of weight.
looking at the amount of snow on the reindeer, seems alittle odd why the cones in the bg aren't gettin them.
Whats the image gonna be used for?
Is it gonna be wrapped around a stretch of wall ?

Well from the looks here we just have a large number of duplicated Reindeer. First problem I see is that the Reindeer are missing allot of muscle definition. I can see that you've sculpted some muscles in there but your missing the whole point of using zbrush to sculpt. You need to have that definition in there to begin with and then use zbrush to make it more defined.
What I see here looks like a smoothed version of a blockout. Theres no texture to the reindeer. Even if you were going to do fur and decided not to you could have at least done some sort of a fur texture.
As for the fur not showing enough detail, well thats probably because of the lack of muscle detail. If there was sufficient detail the fur would show off as well. Remember your not trying to show off the muscles of a reindeer but the reindeer itself. Play with the fur some more and tweak the lengths in different areas until you get what your looking for. I feel that if you study the anatomy of the animal better and define those muscle groups better you will have a fine looking piece.
I love the snow and the environment. Its not too cluttered. Really good job here. Only thing I have to say about the environment is flip the color on the sky. The sky is always brighter the higher you go up and darker as you move to the ground.
Good job!
Merry Christmas !
