View Full Version : Maya -2-> .md2 ?
belly80naz 06-20-2003, 01:05 PM Hi all, I've got an animated character with joints and IK and FK, and I want to export all the maya 4.5 scene to an .md2 object, the Quake 2 format, for an interactive game in OpenGL interface. Is there a plugin or an exporter to do this? I find a plugin on highend3d.com but it works only for Maya 3.

there is a brand new plugin on highend3d that is supposed to safely translate maya files from say version 4.5 to older versions (even possibly version 3). you may want to check that out so then you could open your file in maya 4.5, export it out to maya 3, and then it could work. its worth a try at least. I was able to export a maya 5 file back to maya 4.5 seemlessly without issue, so maybe it'll work in this situation too.
here's the link

its called rmMaExport v1.0
good luck!

How are you going with that belly80naz? I need to do the same thing =) but for more than a few models.
How sucessfull were you, or did you find a better method? Anyone else? =)

There's a program out there called milkshape 3d. It's this basic looking 3d apt that allows you to import maya obj's then export them to whatever you want including .md2, .md3, ut2003, the sims, max payne, moh, bf1942 and whole crap load of other things. It will not only import your model but will also import your textures, rigs, and animation as well. The only problem is it's a 21 day trial and you sorta have to learn another 3d program, but's it's super easy to learn and should only take about 30 minutes to pick up. Hope that helps

Thanks! and for $25 I just may buy it.
Last time I modded a game was Doom2, so I haven't done it w/ 3d models yet. Since it only imports obj files (they only save mesh and UV right?), will I have to rig and animate it in this program?

Actually i think you might be right about that. It's a shame cause you also have to rig it in milkshape too and you're totally limited with their skeleton tools. i think it will only transfer the rigs and ani if you're using xsi.

Sorry for the long time that I don't write here, but I've got e-mail problems and I can't see your answers in time.
However, thanks to "Mondo" for the program, but I don't understand how can I export the animation from Maya, what exportation type you suggest to me? Obj? xExport? ...? I've got my character and his animation in a maya scene, I've seen that milkshape can import a lot of extantions of files but Maya haven't all of this with animation export.

hmmm, now that belly80naz mentions it, doesn't Maya have a lot of stuff to export directly to games? Perhaps we could export everything out of Maya as a DirectX format (or some other game format, i dunno if there is a DirectX one) and import that in to Milkshape to convert it to the final format?

Try downloading the bonus game tools from the maya site, it may give you more export options.
