Hi :wavey: ,

this is my first thread. Its an animation of one of my favourite actors robin williams. It is a scene from the movie "One Hour Photo", modeled and rendered in maya. So what do you think?

thanks :D

You are right, in the movie he has blond hair, but it wasnt my target to get a 1:1 copy of the movie scene. So i kept the hair brown (i was happy when i finally finished it ;) )

so here are some wires

huhh, this is truly amazing stuff you have here. i like the modeling much, but i think that the face morphs in the animation are a bit strong.

but it's fantastic anyway!!

Good work on it so far... I really like Robin Williams, so this was interesting to see. I think you have his likeness down to a tee, but I think the lip syncing makes him look like he forgot to put his dentures in. I like the secondary motion of his brow as he's talking... just the mouth is a little too heavy on the slanted, overlapping speech. I believe Robin's character in One Hour Photo was a lot less animated... very depressed, lonely soul. And yeah, the blonde hair helps define the character.

I realize this was probably more detailed in getting his facial structure and mannerisms right, but his hands look like Geri's from Geri's Game... kinda feeble and thin. Plus, Robin's one hairy mofo... he's even got me beat, although I think I'm giving him a run for his money. If you're going for the Robin Total Package, might want to put more hair on his arms and top of his hands even.

Other than that, SUPERB job... can't wait to see more! :)

Persuading stuff - the hands and the head act very well. Also the eyes and the frowning of the forehead. Perhaps the shoulders and the whole upper body act a bit dull and inactive. Looks like the guys in the middle ages wearing very heavy cloths
I like the hands - nice modeling

That is amazing work, i love it, the hands, eyes, hair wonderful job.
But what is he actually saying??

Hey nice model and render! Facial Animation is still a bit stiff, especially the eyes and cheeks. Therefore the character seems somewhat unlively.

But overall great work man. Was it a job at your company or just for fun and practise?

greetz to all the guys at TheLightworks - Toby - Arne - Oliver and Arnold if he´s still working there.

Cheers!

did you use a picture of robins face for the texture or did
you paint it yourself?

Love it, agree about the dentures comment though, looks too dark inside his mouth maybe, or need more teeth showing? Or maybe his top lip looks sucked in, can't quite decide. Really hard to fault it though!!

Great work

Cause thats what I do best. This is going to seem a bit on the strong side of critiques, but please don't take it too personal.

I like the animation of his face, and his hands. They keep attention for quite some time. His lips seem a bit too solid. I'm going to agree with the denture comment. I did notice a lot of things however, like the reflection of his skin on his shirt. That was a very nice touch. I'm not sure if you have a blur, or Depth of Field effect going on, but its not needed. What I'm talking about is the blurry-ness of the coffe cup. I don't think it would be that out of focus since its not that close to the camera. The poster on the wall is nice, but a bit blurry as well. Watch the particles of smoke on the coffee, they're clipping through the cup a bit. I love the textures of Robin himself, but the eyes seem a bit dark. I like the glasses as well. I think the overall animation is good, just a bit more focus is needed on the lip sync.

Wow really great work :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
btw. is Tobias Richter still working at The Lightworks ? Around 10 years ago his workshop about modelling an X-Wing was it what brought me into cg :)

Thats amazing!

Whats your hair tech? Seems like a multiple 1-face-polys
scattered - did u notice that in the righ corner of the hair u
can see the poster through the hair ?

;) Extreme!

Wow, I didnt expect that mass off posts on the thread. A big Thank You for your comments and crits :D .

The animation was a fun project to get some experience and practice in Character Animation. Actually its my first finished animated work. So thanks for the positive reactions.

For the colour map and bump map I used a Pic of Robin and modified it in Photoshop. Other maps where painted.
The smoke is made with maya fluids.

The hair was made by color and transparency map on nurbs planes.

Yes, Tobias is still working at The Light Works. Its his company ;)
And thanks for the greets to the others, Alex.

A high Res Pic of his head and some texture maps will be posted soon.

I meant Arnold as I sad "if he still works there". I´m in Bonn upcoming week, maybe I´ll stop by for a moment to see some of the people again and to have a little chat.

see ya

Fantastic job! I really think you have captured the essence of Robin Williams as best as you could! My question is how long did that take to render? Especially using fluid effects!? And you didn't render this in Maya did you? Thanks for the anim.

Thanks again for the comments.
And of course for pluggin :)

Indeed I focused on reaching the typical look of Robins play, which I love (especcially when he plays serious characters)

The (2d-)fluids rendered very fast, maybe 10 minutes.
Robin took about 12 hours to render at 800x600.

Everything is rendered in maya directly.

For the lighting I used GI Joe (plus some extra lights), a plugin, which fakes a GI-like look by placing many dome-and groundlights casting soft shadows. Bouncelights had to be created manually.

I think you did a great job. Isn't completely lifelike. But you still did one amaizing job... How long did it take you to do it in maya?

For that guy who was wondering what he said, I had to listen a few time, just cause he mumbles a bit:

"Oh yeah, it was wrong of me to create a scene if front of those customers, Bill; It won't happen again."

I'm a huge Robin Williams fan, that was great. I agree with the comment about the sunken cheeks/lips, his lips are a bit stiff. BUT, I absolutely love it anyway, you've got the character down exactly, the modelling is good, the texturing is great.

Cooool stuff.

Great likeness of Robin Williams! If they ever do a remake of Willie Wonka, one of my favorite films of all time, Robin Williams is the best man for the job. He's a natural born character actor.

Its a start, but it needs a full clicks up on the realism scale. Its overall too soft, from shadows to texture detail. By over doing the GI cheat, the scene feels like the outdoors, and not like an interior.

The animation is over done, and lacks motivation. Give it more purpose, more soul. Also, where are his teeth? It's as if we are seeing Robin's grandfather with his dentures out.

Looking at the camera lens, there is also too much DOF blur.

keep pushing.

Well, like i said before it is my very first Character Animation using Bones, Clusters, Blendshapes and stuff (I`m sure your crits will help me for the next one). It was a trial and error practice project, a long learning process. There were also some breaks cause several jobs. So its hard to say how much time i needed to finish it.

The DOF was made in Post, and i really swear that it is that extreme in that movie scene. Yeah his teeth are hardly to see, but even absolutely not visible in the original scene. Maybe i opened his mouth a bit to much.

Thanks again for tips and comments
...and stars :D

The mesh topology is messy, too much avoidable tris all over the face. Except that, I like the model

ToiletDuck
06-22-2003, 05:38 PM
But how long did it take. I'm just getting into this stuff and am curious?

peter_CG
06-22-2003, 09:03 PM
I used a few triangles to bring some edgeloops to an end or to model some forms without gettin too much faces/polys.
I think as long as it doesnt affect the render in a bad way its absolutely okay to use some triangles.

Well, lets say the modelling and texturing took both about 5 days, animating about 10 days, rendering and post about 3 days work, i guess. But I think with more and more practice you`re gettin quicker.
