View Full Version : Cinematic Game Icons - Character - Ionized
Ionized 06-20-2003, 11:10 AM Well here it is, my second challenge. I feel like such a veteran... or not... hehe..
I've been working on this gal for a while but havn't got around to posting anything till now so here she is.
Havn't really developed any backstory to her but I'm sure I'll think one up when she's done. Didn't work off any concept to begin with either. Just sort of started modelling and tweaked her as I went.
Inspirations are SC:ghost and final fantasy X
Yet to be added are a cybernetic forearm and a big f*ing gun.
C&C most welcome.

When I say, I didn't have a concept, I lie. Here's the rough sketch I'm basing her off. The way I usually work is by generating a full color PS job or at the least, a front and side view to model from. With this, I decided to wing it a lot more, hence me saying that I didn't have a concept. I didn't think i would be an issue, but after reading the rules it seems you actually need one, so thanks for pointing it out Hexodam :)
The initial sketch was lacking a lot of detail, so I've basically used it more of a reference for my intial vision rather than as a guide to modelling.
I started modelling about 2 days after the start of the competiton, so a bit less that 3 weeks ago I guess.
Actually... just been reading up on the competition rules and it mentions that you need to specify what sort of game your creation is from...so I'm guessing she's from a 3rd person action game of some sort.

I have been thinking a bit more about the backstory. Read on...
Sigil, the lead heroine of the game Chrono Hunter. She is a geneticaly enhanced human engineered by the United Systems Government in the year 3542 as part of the Chrono Preservation Initiative. She is one of only 23 humans who are physically and mentally capable of enduring the stresses of time travel.
She is charged with the duty of hunting down and terminating anomolies in the timeline that resulted from the 3533 Rifthole experiment conducted by the Tau corportation. The Rifthole experiment was one of numerous attempts by humans to achieve faster than light travel between star systems. The experiment went disasterously wrong and instead of creating a loop in timespace, the fabric of time itself was shifted. This resulted in almost half a million individuals from earth being timeshifted to various destinations throughout earths future and history.
It is Sigil's duty to track down the most dangerous of these and terminate their disruptive prescence.

Sounds like a good concept. I can't see the pics though.
Good luck with your model

Good luck.

Thanks for your comments guys. Really appreciate it :)
No cyberchick would be complete without her cyber arm. So here it is. I'm pretty happy with it so far. It could maybe do with some more chunkiness, but then again I do want to avoid the heavy powerarmour look. She ain't no spacemarine!
Let me know what you think.

Yawn... it's very early... :wise:
Heres a render of the face and some wires to go with it. Got a bit more work to do on it, but she's looking pretty cute so far.

Hi Ionized...........Sorrry I have missed your thread up until now.I like your concept and your modeling efforts look to be coming along well. The hands are clean, the head model is early yet,but I am sure will look very nice when finished. The design is pretty complcated, always better, more eye candy is always welcome in my opinion.Details too look good.Keep going,it's coming along nice.

Nice modeling.Rather conventional character however.I think to be a major game Icon you need more origianlity more off the beaten track look and ideas. It's rather been there done that a million times right now.Perhaps add something to add something more memorable.
Modeling is good as I said, but just too mundane.Good work none the less from a modeling standpoint.Just not eye catching from a originality perspective.

Fair comments. As I said earlier in my post, I didn't spend much time on the concept. Perhaps now it is showing through. Just goes to show how important the concept itself if to the final product.
There are some very original ideas in this comp and my kudos goes out to all of them. I've just never attempted a sci-fi girl before and thought I'd try and pull off one that does the cliche justice. Once I get one of those under my belt, I'll probably never go back to cybergirl land again.
:D
Perhaps if she had a theme or a slant to the concept, that might help define a unique look.
You could go for a more organic or skeleton inspired approach, perhaps a bit Geiger (you could make it your own somehow)
Or something to do with reptilian scales for the armour...or you could draw inspiration from knights or romans.
Some artists add unfeasably ornate or big hair (like Feng) that can look cool....
Others go for fantasy/bondage inspiration (Brom!)

06-24-2003, 05:58 AM
I think I might have something like that in mind. It depends on if I have time to do it I guess. But I'd like to work some tabard like cloth into the design. Sorta like what knights wear into battle so they can tell each other apart.
It's just an idea at the moment and I'd have to see how well it blends into the rest of her costume. Also, I havn't done much with Reactor's cloth dynamics, so I'll have to see how well it behaves itself.
Stay tuned for further developments.

Latest render. Attatched the head and cyberarm and have knocked up some hair for her. I'm trying for the beaded dreads look. Not sure if it's working all that well. Have to mess around with it a bit further.

This is really an action game hero...will u paint her...I would love to see it textured!!

06-25-2003, 09:26 AM
Thanks for you comments guys :D
Kwak: Yes I know what you mean. I think it is part of the pose and part of the design. The design bit is intentional. I wanted her looking rough and ready for battle as opposed to the sexy minx running itno a fight in a bikini.
Also, I'm not totally happy with the face as it does look slightly masculine. I'll try and get this sorted fairly soon.
Dimitris: I dont think I'll be able to get her textured for the final deadline. I still have more modelling and the rigging to do yet!!!
I suppose could rush it, but I'm not the worlds fastest texture artist I really want to do a good job on her. I promise to finisher her off at some point in the not too distant future and post it up.

Very Nice, I really like the detail youve got there, especially the bionic hand.
The only thing that looks a little off to me is the boots, they may be a little big......but thats just me

Can you slim her legs down a little?
Perhaps show her belly-button?
I think perhaps her legs are too low.
Geez...complain a lot don't I?
great work.:p

06-27-2003, 10:48 AM
Belly button... now theres an idea.
A quick update. Given her some short chunky dreads... I think she looks cute. Also added a loincloth and some armour plating around her waist.

Carrying on the techknight theme a bit further. Heres her sword.
Next I'm going to assign some material IDs and see how far I can get with procedural textures. Not going to have time to paint her properly before the deadline unfortunately.
Then some facial expression, rigging and lighting.... *phew*... are we there yet???

a quickie color job I did over the weekend. All proceduraly done at the moment except her face. I'm thinking I might need to atleast add some decals to the armour and possible map the loincloth with some woven pattern or something.

Hi man...Your character is one of my favourites already...so game looking hero!!!....clean and imaginative work. I am glad to see that u are having progress with her...only thing i would change(maybe u will too and i don't know it yet...lol) is the color on her eye shields ( the red one)...
p.s cool sword by the way . Will u put her in a enviroment ?
Ionized
06-30-2003, 09:20 AM
Thanks Dimitri :)
The textures arn't quite final yet. I want her to have a worn and weathered look, but one that is colourful enough to go into a game. I think I will change the eyeglasses to a more yellow colour perhaps and maybe even add more detail into the straps.
I don't think I'll be putting her in an environment for the deadline. But I want to continue it after the challenge, so maybe I will make her one then.

HI there @Ionized,
i realy like your work on this chalange, its impresive, fast and most of all well done. I like the level of detail, all the armour, the sword looks very oryginal. The textures you v made gave her a game kind of look (like low poly models) maybe you could try to add some more dirt scraches things like that- well thats me:)
Keep going, are you planing to meke a special pose or you will eave her like she is now?
Great job
Take care

wohhoo that a kickass model
damn and you did it really fast too
her hair is a little weird though, its like they are made of orange dreadlocks or someting? I didn't read all the posts it might have been stated already and maybe you like it that way, just thought I needed to say someting
Yep ! Great work, love it...
I wondered wich software did you use? I first thought it was Clay, but...
Not really important, it's all about the man behind the soft :)
Cya soon, with more update i hope... :wavey:

Thanks all for your comments. Glad you like her. I'm pretty happy with her myself. The modelling is what has talken me the longest. I did most of the textures in one 6 hour sitting using a variety of procedural shaders.
Jelwa: I will get around to posing her very soon. I'm still not totally happy with the textures yet. I'm thinking of adding some decals and unwrapping some areas.
Colin: Yes, they are supposed to be funky dreads. I tried my hand at some patch modelled hair and it just looked like it would take too long to get right. These dreads use 2 crossed over gradient shaders applied to a displacement modifier to get a sort of woven look.
Ryu: I've used 3dsMax5 with it's built in light tracer to render. It could make a dead cow look half decent...hehe... ;)
Bodini: Sure, I'll get her back rendered up soon.
Wow Ionized, you really are great! One day I hope I can be as awesome a modeller as you.
Can I have your phone number??

Ionized, I have some question, maybe you can help, all are technical questions, because the high-end character modeling is my favorite line on the cg world.
1) what are your system configuration? ram, cpu, hdd, video, etc.
2) what are the poly count for this character? without meshsmooth or subd, and for the final render.
3) what amouth of time you spend on deesing, modeling, texturing, rigging (not animate)
4) you learn 3d in some school or just by yourself?
5) what software you consider,"a must"? (3dmax,photoshop...)
6) real photo bitmaps, painting on photoshop, or procedural??
thanks for your time, the answers can be really helpful to me.

07-05-2003, 04:42 AM
Looking pretty good, but lose the plastic shades while you still can.her eyes are too wide open too, squint them a little. And the skin textures need more earth hues, more subtle pinks and softness. How about a closer look at them.
Anyways I think it's close to being quite good, just needs that little extra attention,at least to me.Keep going on.:wip: :wip:
Ionized
07-05-2003, 06:23 AM
Cheers, thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the fact you take some time out to give me some C&C.
Sure plaguelord, anything to help. Thanks for your interest :)
1) I'm using a 2.4g AMD, 512 RAM, Geforce4Ti
2) Currently its standing at 49000 without meshsmooth(gee that a lot) and 377744 with meshsmooth
3) As I said earlier in the thread, I didn't spend much time at all designing her and have just been winging it. I've found this to be a lot of fun but you have to make a lot of descision on the fly, which can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
Modelling has taken me about 3 week in my spare time, which I think would roughly translate to about a week in full time.... so say 40 hours maybe.
Texturing has taken me maybe 10 hours so far, and that's using procedural shaders for most of it. I had been doing some prior research into skin shaders which I used as a starting point and I think that may have saved me some time there. I recommend having a few basic materials saved out to use as starting points. Even if your not going to be using them as the final texture, they are great to just slap on to a surface at any time to preview what your model will look like.
Rigging I havn't started yet, but I intend to use the CGskin beta instead of character studio's physique for this one. I havn't used it before, so I anticipate a fair ammount of trial and error, but apparently the results are pretty damn good. I'm hoping it won't take me longer than 8 hours or so.
Lighting and posing aswell can take a while. Getting a good dynamic pose and lighting even the simplest of scenes can make all the difference. I expect that will take me a few hours also.
4) I did a 6 month course in max. It was good for getting me started, most of the importat stuff I've learned is from working with some very talented people.
5) I use Max and Photoshop, but I totally believe you can do amazing things with any program.
6) It really depend what style you are going for and what sort of timeframe you have to do it in. My preference with unlimited time would be unwrapped and painted in photoshop with the usual assortment of specular, bump and reflect/refract maps.
Scottosh: Thanks for your tips. I'm working on her facial expression at the moment, I agree it's not quite there yet. I'll post up the skin tones soon. I'd love some feedback on them. It's still something I'm perfecting.
Sorry, but the shades stay :) what in particular don't you like about them?

07-05-2003, 07:05 AM
I've done a bit more work on the skin shader and I think it's almost there. Heres a pic of it. I'd love some feedback.

atnik: break is well underway and well deserved for all of us I think. I can now go home after work instead of hainging round and drinking too much coffee.
shaykai: Thanks very much :) The best things about these challenges are comments like that. You should enter the next one, they really are a lot of fun and you learn a lot about your own work and the practices of other people.
I think I might take a break myself though. There is a lot of long hours that goes into all the good entries and I need a rest before I do it all again.
