I have no idea, what exactly you mean. From colored particle trails to tinted ink blotches to hand animated graphical splash elements, the clip contains pretty much everything, so yes, particles are involved here and there...

Trapcode Particular, most likely. It allows you to vary the color over the lifetime of a particle and/or animate the particle color at birth, so you automatically get smooth trails. You'd simply turn off all forces for Wind, Gravity and so on and give your particles rather long life cycles so they remain visible for a considerable time. You can of course also use the CC Particle Systems that come with AE, It's just a considerable bit trickier. An alternative way is also available by using the Vegas effect tied to a mask path. If you put Colorama, Tint or Tritone on top of it, it is also possible to create those colorful rainbow trails.
