View Full Version : Dragon scale Bump/Texture Help
Shellfish 12-14-2008, 07:41 AM I'm trying to create non-uniform dragon scale with eash pis of scale tile up to each other. I try to use Mudbox but if I really want the scales to tile it up and also follow the flow of the topo, I will have to do it scale by scale. ( That what I think ) But that took up to much time if its for production. Anyone know any tips from photoshop, Z-bush, Mudbox in creating Dragon scales? Thanks!

Something like that is difficult to automate. You could try something like a cellular procedural map, which will give you stuff that looks sorta like scales, but they won't be directional like if you place them by hand.
I'd personally just bite the bullet and do it by hand. But make sure you have made a scale brush, so with each press of the brush you get a scale, and then go to town.

Here's a lizard I painted scale by scale a few years back...

This was even harder then it would have been now, since this was before photoshop allowed you to resize custom brushes. So every time I needed a smaller or larger scale, I had to make a brand new brush for it instead of just pressing the [ or ] keys. I think it took me about 2 days to place the scales.
