Hello fellow CG'nites!

I am currently working on a small hobby project to enhance my shadering/textureing skills.

The scene i am working on is a set of my own KOSS headphones with i use, and i need help with the shadering/textureing of the cushion material. (The wrinkly, soft material you see in the ref pic)

This is a test render of the scene: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b149/caligra/Render_TEST.jpg

But i need to find a way to make the material that serves as the soft parts of the headphones, like this ref picture: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b149/caligra/photo1.jpg

So if anybody has any tips or know how to create these kind of materials it would be much appreciated! :)

The program i use is Maya, and render in Mentalray.

Cheers!

P.S Dont take notice of my post count, its bugged! :P

Hi,

I am using max here, but the basic teqniques are the same between the apps.I think that for the wrinkle detail you want it would best to make them in a high res sculpting programs like mudbox or zbrush and then generate a normal map from the detailed mesh and apply to the poly/subd model in maya that will be used to render the wrinkles details. As for the shading try to define the thin leather type of a mat experimenting with various shaders and higlights params.
If you are not familiar with such apps. you can try to use some kind of foto texture that resembles that kind of pattern or try to paint a bump map in photoshop by hand.
Thats what I would do,hope it helps.

Wow, thank you for your answer Giziz!

I never even though about sculpting the wrinkles, thx for opening my eyes a bit :)

I do have experience with both Zbrush and Mudbox, if only fundemental it should be enough to sculpt and to export a normalmap.

Thx again for your help!

Cheers!
