Hi guys,
I was just curious about what peoples opinion is about the new curve editor for controlling motion in max 5.

does anyone use it? and if you do, do you think it has increased your productivity and/or the quality of your animation?

look forward to hearing from you.

Works fine for me. Curves always help. It would be hell to animate without them!:wip:

I agree, I couldn't get by without them especially in conjunction with custom attributes so that all my keys are easily found in the one place!!

It'd be impossible to animate without it. The only problem is it's soooo damn slow. If you have a scene with say a character and it runs for a few hundred frames then opening a curve editor for any of the bones in the character can take seconds. This is increased again if the rig is a biped, and don't even talk to me about the workbench.

just my crazed rant, i apologise :)

cheers,
phil

I'm totally new to animations, just doing stills so far, but the curve editor helps me with my first steps.

Well, I've never used it and manage to animate well enough, that's because I've been a bit lazy though. It's definitely the way to go, and definitely next on my ever growing list of features I MUST learn. It will no doubt increase my productivity mucho.

thanks for your comments guys.. sorry I took so long to respond. I have been rather busy.

well looks like the people that responded seem to like it.. I guess I am alone then in thinking it could have been a lot better.

Maybe I was expecting it to have a similar function to that of After Effects key framed curves.

My point is why waste your time playing with 3 curves to move an object in 3d space when it can be done in the view port. In my opinion I think the curve editor could have been used to control the interpolation between keyframes. seems more logical and simpler to me.

save on a using a lots of keyframes.

anyway.. thanks for your feedback.

Dude, that's what the curve editor does. It controls the interpolation between keyframes. You know, ease?

I think you really need to have a second look at it. It's apparently exactly what you want, and you don't know it.

Yeah, I't indespensable. And phil is right, its just too slow, loading up motion capture can take several minutes.

really???

when i played with it.. all it seemed to do was split up my trajectory into its 3 views..

i would move a key curve up and the object would change its position in the 3d view. and im not talking about moving its position somewhere between two key frames.. this is while im sitting on a key frame.. thats not right.

i do need to take another look at it though... i got frustrated with it too quickly, when i had a look.. :P

It's ok, I did the same thing. :D

It's actually a really nice tool for animation. The guys are right, though. It's a hog when it comes to really complex stuff. But for alot of work, it fits just right.

Don't forget you can also just adjust one transform at a time to you get just one curve. And you can toggle presets. It's like a robust version of the old trackview, in that you can set the ease of keys. But now, you have utter control. It's indespensible.

Play with it some more. It takes some getting used to.
