It's time to tell you about our idea.
We have choosen the myth of Atlantis and want to show you the truth about it's sinking.
The little robot we are modeling atm is our main character and, of course, will play his role in this tragic happening ;)
Our plan is to finish most of the geometry within the next two weeks. Which means tons of pipes, valves, furniture
and some of the exterior of our atlantis itself. Hopefully we are able to manage this in time, because our exams are in sight
and there are still some study projects running.
We hope you liked the first few images! And of course soon we will upload more ;)

loving it so far! It really captures the steampunk essence the lighting is great and the level of detail in this scenario is awesome... somehow I don´t think the textured version of the scenario have the deepness of the untextured one. It seems that the light is much more elaborated than it shows on the textured version. I hope this comment can help you improve this wonderful work!

you are right!
I thought about the same thing while putting this frame together^^ we have to try to enhance the impact of the lightingpass in compositing! atm its just multiplied. I would try to achieve high saturated burning lit areas and slighliy desaturated bluish dark ones...
and hopefully there is enough time ;)

Hi folks!
I thought it would be nice to show you one of our first scenes,
so that you can see what we are aiming for.
You could say we entered the hot phase and the whole team hasn't really slept in days...
i think you all know what i am talking about...
by the way... this would be a good chance to introduce our team, eh?
1. Martin Köhler (the guy that posted all the crazy stuff before, is what you would call our "Art Director")
2. Chris Hempel ("The Mean Animating Machine")
3. Simon Prager ("Winner Of The Poly Award")
4. Christian Stadach ("That's me")
don't take the nicknames to serious... In reality it turned out to be the "Everyone does
everything" way.
Enough talk!
Here is the link to our animation preview:

@Lemog: Thanks for the encouraging words! :) We put lots of work into this,
and so it is allways heartwarming to see that this is appreciated and noticed by other
people. I am very glad our little movie entertained you!
@musi: You ever doubted that? :) Nah, we had plenty of time left... about 5 minutes
i think... :surprised
No but seriously, thanks for your good wishes!
@all: Good luck with the judging! You also did a great job!
I am really positively surprised about the variety and originality of entries in this contest!

Nice work guys! Very cute story and I liked the steam effects you used throughout it. Did you make those with fumefx or another voxel-based volumentric system? Or were they stock footage elements?

it's really visible... you must be proud
Thanks! We are indeed!:D
@Tyson: Glad you liked it! :applause:
The Steam footage we used was from DetFilmsHD.
Essential we just keyframed its position by hand and composed it in a multitude of ways,
to make it look more realistic and integrated.

Hahah-Really nice entry! Was the steam stock? It was all excellently executed!
A result to be proud of! Congrats guys!

Very great work guys!
I love the detail and quality you have put into it. The story is a very solid one too.
I really liked the animation but it doesn't seem to be equal over the whole line. But that's just a minor drawback.
What renderer did you use? I really liked the chrome and copper shaders.
cheers

At first, I thought the sound is to weak but after seeing it the second time in the cinema it came out pretty nice. Your sound is actually quite good. Though the music is a question of taste, it compliments the slightly clumsy character :)

Thanks a lot to all of you!
We are glad you like the final result :)
its still some refining necessary but after this challenge we have all time in the world. hopefully I still can do a big part because I go to ireland next semester (yaaaaay^^)
But we are really proud of it! as mentioned I think its the first time any of us did a fully 3d animated film in this dimensions.
@Nothingness
we used mental ray, but especially the metal shaders looked great with the standart renderer as well. long live the HDR Image^^
@Pyke
jup, we used steamfootage. at first we planned to shoot it by ourself
but Mr Time said no...so we came back to detonationfilms.
now after 16 awesome hours of sleep and looking through most of the other finals. I am also very proud of having participated at this challenge, because the quality and content of the shors is just great :) I think all challengers did an awesome job here!
so, good look with the judging as well!
and of course thanks for all of the nice critiques we recieved here. If its for us please
dont stop with it. you were very helpfull!:applause:

nice piece. Is the reference to Al gores inconveniant truth on purpose. Like atlantis, a lost high tech civilization like our own collapsed due to iresponsable usage of resources??? Guess not, but it just hit me. hehehe.
The robot is cool. And the integration of -real footage(?)- steam and smoke is well integrated.
i think the whole thing is a bit too long. So you guys would have longer time with the animation.

I'd agree with Andreas, that the pacing is a bit too slow, but overall I think you guys did a great job.
I love all the details on the robot.
I especially like the look and feel you guys managed to give it. It looks stunning!
Great job, and good luck with judging :)

Yup, you're right. You are one of the first to notice this. We went through several titles,
somehow came up with this one and finally thought it would fit pretty well... :)
@ andreasng & doffer:
I have to admit that the animation could be a bit more "snappy" and speeded up in some
scenes, even though the slow pace of the piece was generally intended.
Thanks a lot for your comments, we're happy you enjoyed our movie. :)
Best to you,
Cmdr. Pi
