Mmh something I find strange :
There's about 75% of walls and 25% of windows, so it must be quite dark inside this building...:D

But it makes it look heavy, almost armored, I like it ;)

(Mmh... Makes me think I always need this kind of wall map but never did it...)

Looking good man! Love the textures, it indeed does look like a fun project.

One thing, the first and second level of the left building have the exact same texture/placement.

great job though!

i liked your first composition the best... nice and dynamic.

also, you are using concrete textures from animax? i think you need to edit them some more so they are not recognizable as such. nothing worse than seeing a picture and knowing where they got their texture from.

yeah good point maybe I should modifiy them a bit more

Real NICE!

Some suggestion i got in mind is, don't forget to add some shields on the sides of the road!
Do you know a whole family could DETONATE if a car goes out of the road? Ehehehehehe

stuff in the distance normally has a blue-ish touch due to the atmosphere and stuff..

dont know if that would work in your pic with the white sky tho, but maybe its worth a spin.

Looking Good! I like the new additions. It might be cool to see some bridges connecting a few of the buildings together so that the people could walk from building to building without going all the way down to the ground floor...and maybe some exterior elevators too! Just some ideas i wanted to throw out :D Keep it up!

jacobp1
06-22-2003, 11:52 PM
I really like the faceted lights.. I dont know why, but I do.

I agree with the bridges idea, that would be great.

jampoz
06-23-2003, 05:24 AM
Man I truly LOVE the external elevator and the bridges idea, yeah work on it! Will make the scene full of little details, very complex and entertaining to look at!

Look, why don't you try some glass/plastic shields on the sides of the road?
Like that:
(_)
Makes sense?
( ) = Shields
_ = road

But not close, make the top open, so we can see can inside and get nice reflections/refractions too, and will actually protect the building much more if some car accident happen
The problem with the idea of roads like that is that car accidents are unpredictable and everything could go off-road and fly somewhere hitting a building or, if you gonna make it, a bridge where people are walking

At least here in Rome we got a road like that and we got hard plastic shields on the sides
(they are really dirty 'cause of smoke/smog, would be an interesting detail to add if you gonna do it)

otacon
06-23-2003, 05:44 AM
This is what im talking about when i say "bridges" between the buildings...im not saying you should copy these exact bridge designs, but just to give you a visual of what i was talking about in case you didnt understand.:)

http://www.3dennis.com/matte/matte04.jpg

NOTE: *I DID NOT MAKE THIS* This is a great futuristic city design by Dennis Sedov, that i just had to show you to get my point acrossabout the bridges, and who knows, maybe youll pick up another idea from it. :D

SimonReeves
06-23-2003, 12:50 PM
otacon : nice one - bridges good idea, i did think about this at one point. [i think]

jampoz : good idea too :) we have those on motorways sometimes in the uk
If max's raytracer is being nice to me then maybe I'll put them in :)

like you say could make them dirty, and be in big panels I think

i need to buy brazil

thanks for the input guyss

Great!

I like the mood and colors of the image that is on 2 page of this thread (most upper one). That really reminds me of Minority Report and I really liked the city in that movie.

The mood in your work is great. Is there more of that city, I really would like to turn my head to other direction :)

Lookin' pretty good. I would work on the wheels a bit. Futuristic doesn't mean weird. I don't like the bending spokes, just make them straight. What would be cool is those really wide tires :).

jampoz

I approve, really wide tire... yeah....

I think this city's looking really awesome so far, and I like your motorcycle-with-cockpit things. I have a question that anyone can probably answer - how do you get that kind of hazy looking overexposed glare with the max renderer? Does anybody know what I mean? Anyways, great job so far, I can't wait to see it finished!!

otacon
06-26-2003, 04:24 AM
Im liking this car. But i agree with Razorwolf about the wheels, i dont thing you need those bent up spokes. And i was wondering, is it a two wheeled vehicle? Because how exactly is it gonna turn? It looks like it would turn like a motorcycle, but its way too low to the ground, and would just get all scraped up. Also, how is that rear wheel gonna connect to the car, because it doesnt look like the back end goes down far enough. I might be asking these questions a little too early, because i know your still working on it, so if thats the case then you can ignore what i said, but its looking good , and i cant wait to see it on the road!:D

SimonReeves
06-26-2003, 04:26 PM
woadiestyol : in photoshop ;)

There is small wheels inside the front for steering/balence type stuff..
there is a wee swingarm that holds the wheel on at the back,

Razorwolf
06-26-2003, 06:20 PM
Very nice. Otacon has a point in the turning though, I don't see that vehicle taking sharp turns. Maybe that's not needed on future roads, I don't know. Glad you changed the wheels :).

One last note, I would keep the colors of the car pretty egal. Some people tend to put a lot of logos and symbols on them, but irl, how many cars do you see with logos and symbols?

=)

Great work dude.

otacon
06-26-2003, 06:23 PM
Cool. Now that you've added those figures in the car its a lot easier to get the scale of the whole thing. Maybe you could add some glowing lights on the underbelly of the car, right along the sides, it would help lighten up the dark areas underneath and it seems like it might fit well into the whole futuristic idea.:D Other than that i cant really think of anything else it might need...looking good!

 MAmma Pajamma!!

that's awesome work matey! how long you spent on this so far? and how long did you spend on the design of that 'car' cos it really does :buttrock:

at the moment it's reminding me of a cross between Minority report and Judge Dredd of all things... especially that cell shaded render... you could get a sweet ass graphic novel style out of this..

i'm gonna be following this thread..

PS just an after thought as to the design of the car/trike/bike thing....and the whole steering problem..
if you made the back end more open [so the rear wheel could turn], and used a similar method for steering as bikes do... [so basically it's a bike facing backwards]??! but the steering controls were at the front...that could look seriously funky!
hope you know what i'm on about??

VelvetDragon
06-27-2003, 10:40 AM

Well, it's very good work you're doing. Keep it up ! :)

SimonReeves

I didnt spend that much time on the design, its kinda relates to an old one of mine...

What a great WIP thread. Here we have a great example of good work flow. It started with a very simple lay out and then the detail was lovingly layered on top a bit of a time by it's very talented creator. Everything was kept simple, and rich.

This is a wounderful example of good execution of a vision.

I can not wait to see the final render.

Nice! I was thinking, it might be cool to see some exit signs, speed limit signs, directional signs maybe telling the name of the upcoming city, just stuff you would see on any major highway. Im not sure how you would connect them, but im sure you could think of something that would look cool.;) I like the new render....keep it up!

SimonReeves
06-27-2003, 06:25 PM
ah yes, rendertimes, I remebered to check on that last one, it was around 7mins, with max5 renderer.

hey reevesy

lookin better even more, glad to see the end of the strong red adverts with some nice blue ones, the green effect is cool, give it more a run down effect.

The streets sorta remind me of the game Extreme G Racing... But in my opinion the octagon circle things, would look much better if they were just completely round and had like little lights on the middle, such as to illuminate the streets at night... (i see thats done anyway...:)) Can't wait to see more!

GateKeepeR
06-28-2003, 02:30 AM
Whats with the light where it is, in RL there wouldnt be a light there, it would either just merge onto the road with no problems, or in some cases it would be yield, but there wouldnt be a light I wouldnt think

SimonReeves
06-30-2003, 03:49 PM
not much of an update, just changing a few things

got rid of the traffic light things, and the other lights where the rings are, because they just didnt look right

made diff colour cars
and more of them
and changed the general colour/saturation

But keep experimenting and see what you like best! :lightbulb Another idea...how about some wear on that road....like tire marks or something to break up the cleanliness a little bit. Cant wait to see the updates!:D

Great work!

Only thing I dont like that much are those ports.. they make it look like somekind of wipeout game or other similar game, and I think they are just too much.

Well if the game look is your intention then it is perfect :)
CHECKPOINT! ;)

...but in this case the famous "less is more" works pretty nicely I think :) The earlier images with clean futuristic look are great.

Cars are fine , very stylish and ultracool look... they fit very well in this scenario.

Know what?
Try making a corporate building, with glasses and a HUGE company logo, man it would be terrific
I personally think in a future like that there will be huge companies controlling a big slice of the whole market
Something like Microsoft, Honda, Philips, Sony, but even bigger than that, try making a building that can show this concept

I figure it in the background, but WAY MORE visible than all the buildings in foreground, can you understand what I mean?

With his OWN style, different from all others :o)

Isn't it utopic to think about ONE company to rule 'em all?(ehehehe LOTR I truly apologize)
I was talking about a company for each sector
Everything computer related to company A
Everything vehicles related to company B
Everything house/furnitures related to company C
Everything porn related to company D, and you bet i'ma be the leader here :oP

But, you need a main building for that company, and the logo must be on it anyway
Advertisement apart, I think those companies got a logo on their building for reckognition purposes only, not advertisement

At least the terrorists know what to bomb... :o/

I think the cars are too blurry at the moment, wouldn't it be cool if one or more of them were in focus ?

This would give a better sense of distance in the picture, no ?

I wouldnt say exactly, or not even that close. They don't have much much in common besides the elevated highways and futuristic look. I would say that minority report influenced his design some, maybe

I may find the design of this vehicle a bit boring, you know, like we-all-already-have-seen-that... just an impression...

I mean, the buildings are so damn original looking, they got their own style
But the vehicle... what you guys think?

minority report was definetly some influence, as well as a few other films here and there :)

I think i'll add some more details to the buildings, like you say some logos....
not sure what else to do

Awesome as always. but i think it still needs some more details...something in the right side of the frame maybe...i dont know what, but it needs something...I like the other road you added, although its a little hard to see... Keep at it!:D

you could put another road that comes from behind the 2nd building from the left, and goes accross and behind the right hand building,

I mean this is the future so theres gonna be more traffic then (it took me an hour and a half to get out of newcastle earlier today,)

so sod the green belt, build more roads

if you want to make it a bit different you could make it a freight truck road, or a hanging train line (like a roller coaster)

Other than that its F'ing amazing

Looks awesome!

But why are all the cars at exactly the same distance of eachother, do the have some kind of auto keep distance thingie? :surprised

It might look nice if some of the windows in the dark building are lit. Would be great if you could look inside and see people working, although i don't know if its possible with the type of glass in it.

Oh, maybe there should be some type of futuristic street sign, people in the future want to know where they are going two i think, or do they have a special display for that in the car?

And my last point :p In the distance, i see a bridge, or road in the sky, how is this one supported?

Well, those are my pointers for now, i will be checking up on this project, love to see it finished!

In my opinion, this might be something you could start calling a finished project. I mean, there will always be different things you can add or try, but I think it looks awesome how it is and maybe you should just start working on something new, or start working on an animation or something. That's just my unprofessional opinion anyways.

And actually, it would be really awesome if you could post some sort of wire or just describe your lighting setup, because I really like it and wanna know the secret.

Rock on!:buttrock:

they're not exactly, just roughly, like normal cars....

there are a few supports on the road at the back, but i moved one so you can see them [for next render]

woadiestyol : definetly nearly finished :)
I dont want to add too much

I might play with the fog a wee bit,
but apart from that there isnt much else I want to do

hey how'd you sneak that reply in there..

Very nice, i quite like the look of it. Im going to work on a project shortly and feel this is a good look to it. Grat to see it being used elsewhere.

awesome work...i love the idea of having the traffic lights built into the octagonal structures.

I think that you shouldnt have the cars blurred so much cause you cant see their detail.

my 2c :D

How about making a night-time shot of the scene ??? Would probably give a nice bladerunner feel and you could get to make som nice street lights and stuff....

Just a suggestion

Hmm, he got a point on the blurred cars. Although it would not be realistic to not blur them. Maybe u could make a modern parking place... somewhere, then u could give those cars more atention.

(sorry 4 the bad english)

 looks good,

I think it would be only fair to have a parking lot of some kind, I mean, I would hate for your 'cars' to not show off their detail.

No hate, the stuff looks great! :applause:
