Hi! I have been lurking on this forum for about a year now. I have been unemployed for 3 weeks now - so i have had lots of time to use for modeling and rendering.
- I wanted to make something more than just an unfinished test this time.
- I decided that i would do some kind of "space marine" in similar style to Starhip Troopers, Aliens or Rogue Trooper.... not that original, but i find this sci-fi genre interesting and i haven't done anything similar earlier - at least for realtime purposes.

- The goal was to make hipoly (less than 8000 polys) real time character, with detailed face (which makes it possible to animate eyelids and mouth) and animatable body

- i haven't done any original skins before, so i thought i should try (i have been doing meshes). I also wanted to design rifle for my space commando...

About the Space Commando:

- Total time: 1 week and 2 days
- Modeled in 3dsmax with editable poly (2 days)
- UV unwrapping with 3dsmax UVunwrap modifier (1 day)
- Textures hand painted in photoshop (also used layer effects) (4 days)
- Skinned with skin modifier (4 hours)
- Morpher used for facial expressions (2 hours)

- 7400 triangles in character (roughly 1500 in head, and 1000 in hands)
- Rifle has about 1400 triangles

- Here are the other images:

- Raw 3dsmax renders - no self shadows, only cast shadows to simulate projected shadow. Color maps only:

That looks really good. It's very impressive.

In pose2.jpg the shoulder deforms oddly and the fist doesn't look right (pinky should curl most, ring finger next most, middle finger next least, and index finger the least - they shouldn't all curl the same to avoid the boxy-fist look), but the model is very nicely done.

just for technicality you should remove his index finger from the trigger...if he is a space soldier im sure in the future they will follow the same rules of keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to fire it

i love it though

NIce character. I really dig what you did with that soldier, from concept to everything..very proffesional and solid. You shouldn't be afraid of trying an original concept of your own. With your skills you may try to go up the ladder a bit and develop more solid concepts, also including enviroments / stories. Man, you do that and you are the King (...Sorry Elvis!).
But then again, that's me.
