Virtuoso,

Yeah, it seems like a lot of people are so far away, but I imagine there are a lot of "lurkers" that live in LA with all of the visual effects studios. Do you work for a company in LA?

Anyway, I'm going to try to do this character without using a toon shader since I haven't had any luck with toon shaders. Its so hard to get it to look right.

Actually I am a architect.Out in the Malibu and Westlake Village areas. Also a novelist,it's not official yet,but this Fall one of my two novels will be out in print,Sci-fi fantasy Books of almost 900 pages each. It's very exciting. Also have been in the building biz with the Family for awhile now.

I have been working with my brother on a private project all based on my 2 up-coming novels.Mega work on vast set pieces characters etc,etc... Almost 15 months worth of major details and World creation. All I do is based on my novels.I will showcase it all here in Fall when I have the NDA lifted.

I'll check up on your progress when you get it up.Hey by the way I liked youe efforts last challnege. You should do some more good work here now.See you soon.

Virtuoso,

Thank you for your kind words about my past work, but it's down right embarassing looking at them when you compare it to the exceptional artwork on this site. (sigh) hopefully, i can get to that level soon before i get full on carpal tunnel. My goal is to get one of those spiffy CGTalk awards one day.

Wow! You live an interesting and productive life, what the hell are you doing reading my thread?! Good luck on the novels, may they be as successful as Harry Potter. :scream:

This is an extremely simple character, but this is a good change for me, because I have been doing too many complex characters to the point where I am exhausted and don't want to do the texturing or setup.

Anyway, here is the development of Sasuke kun ("kun" is a term given to young japanese boys).

This took me about 2 hours to do. I think I should be done with the modeling by the end of this weekend so I can have more time for character setup, texturing and some environmental modeling. (A feature lacking in much of my work)

All crits and comments totally welcome. :wavey:

HI. Great start. The model is looking dead on the design. The lips look a little off but I'm sure you are going back and this is just the base. Real fast for two hours!:)

Thanks for you comments Wilson. Yes, the model was still kinda rough when i posted it, but there are a lot of things I fixed since then, including the lips.

I may have spent about 2 hours to get started, but the time i spend on it grows exponentially when I start putting in the detail. I think I spent over 7+ hours now. ugh.

Here is my latest update.

I just realized that I need to make his wrist armor a separate element because when I use influence objects for his wrists, I dont want the wrist armor to deform with the twisting of the wrists.

I think I'm going to add a long scarf too. Kinda dramatic if I do a run cycle with him, but animating it will kind of be a pain.

Texturing and more modeling detail to come next. Hopefully, I can start setup soon after. Crits and comments totally welcome.

You gonna use cel-shading?

Wait, nevermind... just read that part... too bad. I'm sure it'll be great either way, though. I'd suggest trying it atleast, depending on what software you use, it could be an easy task or a challenge.

Thanks for the comments guys. I just updated Sasuke-kun, but when i look back at the second version, there is something I really like about him before. The current version is more refined, but I can't help but want to go back to the older version. hmm..

I think its the size of the eyes and nose. I made the skin color more flesh like, but I kinda liked the grayish skin tone before too. I'm going to adjust the scar in my next update. This scar looks too much like Harry Potter's scar. (As if there wasn't enough Harry Potter mania already).

I'm also going to start working on some Koga clan ninja's for him to fight.

The new one looks a bit too detailed. If you're still trying for the Zelda feel, then I'd say you go back to the last update. I like it though. Keep it up.

Newer one for me Skygunner. But I am just a detail lover.I think with the XBOX 2 and PS3 coming soon, and the start of many of there future games in developement higher polys are going to have a much higher ceiling. So give him some love...Throw him so more polys.

Dancing Monkey
06-24-2003, 04:01 PM
I'm not saying that you shouldn't give it a higher poly count... but for the style that it seems you're going for, I would say that you should keep it low and more round and cartoony... And if at all possible, use cel-shading.

skygunner

Thanks again for the comments guys. I actually agree with both of you. I think the style should keep it relatively simple (round and cute), but not at the sake of the polycount.

You have to be able to look at this character and know what he is and what he is about. Does he seem like a ninja to you? (sans the mask of course)

Hmm, well part of the reason I probably won't go cel shading is because it's not easy for me to get the right look. I have to give props to the makers of Zelda for that. I think it's kind of got the "Adventures of David and Goliath" look to it that I find nostalgic.

As for the detail, this is where I am at, but I probably won't add anymore except for maybe painting in some toenails for him. I guess I'm going to work on his ninja weapon arsenal next.

Well, I totally forgot that he was a ninja... I'm sorry for that. I'd say that you need to give him a more katana-like sword. The sword he has now reminds me of a needle... looks like it has the eye and everything. I'd say, give him the katana. And why'd you take out the sketch at the beginning? Oh well.
It just doesn't look like what I would think a ninja would or should look like. It's good nonetheless.

Dancing Monkey,

I actually didn't intend to take out the sketch but I first posted the sketch on CGchallenge.com, so when I started this thread I naturally pointed the link to what I posted on CGchallenge, if that makes any sense. I'll try and fix it.

It's okay, that you forgot he was a ninja. That is my bad. I wanted him to not have a mask like the stereotypical ninja (More like Ayame from Tenchu), but I am going to adjust him a little more so that it reads better. I think I'll give him a long red scarf.

As for the sword, Sasuke, being a ninja, isn't as refined as a samurai who can afford a spiffy katana so he has to go with the one that he made himself. Just a blade without a hilt with some wrappings for the handle. The "needle eye" is useful for putting rope through to use as a grappling hook when he needs it. It's just a stylistic choice, but it probably doesn't read as well as a katana.

Now that you've explained it all, it looks better. I kinda thought that you could put rope in that hole and throw the sword or something. Cool.

So... When are we gonna see some updates?

It the guy from "Naruto" right ?

skygunner
06-29-2003, 07:28 PM
miL0r/Dancing Monkey-

Hmm, the guy from Naruto?...I actually have never heard of Naruto until now. I mean, I'm sure I might have seen a picture of Naruto at the Asahiya or Kinokuniya bookstore, but I am not familiar with any of the characters from Naruto. I am a big fan of Toriyama Akira though.

Sasuke, is an amalgamation of ninjas from the japanese television, movies, manga and anime i've watched through the years. I wouldn't be surprised if he looked like another ninja because of the obvious ninja stereotypes I've injected, but I've never seen one with this style.

Dancing Monkey,

I actually am surprised anyone even pays attention to my threads. Usually, I hardly ever get feedback in this forum, but thanks for your interest. I try to work every day on this project, but it will be awhile before I show something new because I am doing character setup right now and doing research on japanese architecture for the scene. Maybe sometime this week. How about you monkey, are you working on CG or a character right now?

Actually their is a Ninja in Naruto called Sasuke and he looks in some way like yours :hmm:

06-30-2003, 05:06 PM
Well, I guess I'm going to change the name then, cuz I don't want people to think I just ripped him off.

rikimaru and hanzo are taken. maybe I'll name him ichiro or kenji or something. ;)

thanks for the info miL0r.

Perhaps a cloak of invisibility to further enhance his stealth abilities.

Also to give him that extra game Icon appeal to stand out above the crowd a fun gadget, something within the realm of Ninjas,a toy of some kind? I'll leave that to you,I have too much on my own plate at this time.;)

Anyways I think you should add some depth, for the fun and for the fleshing out of what you do already have.

A famoliar perhaps coul;d be a fun sidekick.Somehting like a body guard? Ok have fun Skygunner.Link has nothing on this lil'guy.
