View Full Version : Decapitation
M_Orlich 06-19-2003, 07:58 PM Hi,
I have a poly character that I wanted to rip the head of so I can use it for something else.
I can't seem to extract or seperate it. I don't remember exactly what vertices I merged to attach it to the body.
Is there anything I can do? Or do I just need to pay more attention next time?
Thanks,
Matt

It keeps coming back with the error message that it's one piece. ignored.
I've tried selecting the faces around the base of the neck, as well as the whole head.
I do have the faces together checked, btw.

You could duplicate the hole model and delete the faces you donīt want.

That's one of the goofy things with Maya's poly editing workflow. It wasn't really designed to easily cut and paste faces.
You have to Edit Polygons->Separate the selected faces into a separate hull first. Then Extract will break all the separate hulls out into individual objects. Kinda strange.
Or like webster suggested, just duplicate the model and delete unwanted faces.
I wrote some scripts for cutting and pasting individual groups of polygons. I'm testing them right now, and hopefully I'll get motivated enough to document and release them someday :p

Really, I get good results, just by selecting the faces and "Edit Polys --> Duplicate" and the delete history.

You might want to try out a nice and simple script:
detachSeparate from highend. I use it all the time. It rocks.
