View Full Version : Rigging an accordion like metal structure (3d Studio max)

Hi,

I am having some trouble, rigging an accordion like strechy structure whatever. I have two approaches but I stuck on both.

First on:

This was my first approach. It is actually pretty simple, but I did not manage to convert the movement of the lines to rotation. In the picture above it is rotated by hand. I have not found a way to rotate the red and the blue line according to the movement.

Second one:

This works pretty well but for some reason, it is not symmetrical. Do you have an idea how to get it more symmetrical?

I hope you got my problem. If you have an idea for a better solution please outline it. I would be glad to hear it.

as far as i can see your bones are not of same length

maybe if you draw them perfectly equal it would work

I'm also guessing that one solver from the start to the end of the chain might produce a better result. Trig of course could solve the problem since it is all just an unknown angle and known sides. There is information about using trig in Max script on my site.
