I need some help making a gun bullet look more realistic. Does anyone have some advice on how to do this ,im using maya,mental ray,
i hav finished modeling it ,

add a bit a bump and use an HDRI image...
That should bring you pretty close to this pic

Usually the main thing overlooked is the specular map texturing. Once you get your black and white grime map done you can duplicate that and use it as a starting point for your spec map. Since it's basically going to show up in white highlights you can make them pretty dark, add color on another layer to blend in and since this is a semi-shiny material you'll probably want to investigate adding a Fresnel/Incidence Angle element
