View Full Version : Help: Editible Mesh or Editable Poly?
HCompston 06-19-2003, 01:00 PM I am just trying to get back into 3DSMax after many years working with Lightwave and I would appreciate an explanation of when you should collapse to an editable mesh and when you should collapse to an editable poly. What is the difference. I have looked in the help and it is a little vauge :)
It appears that Editble Poly has more features than Editble Mesh so I have been using this exclusively. Am I doing it wrong?
Any Advice would be appreciated.
thanks

Howdy !
Basically, there is not that much difference, in the way that internaly i think Max handles EPoly objects much like it would a Mesh (you can see that when using modifiers atop an EPoly object); but EPoly does feature more tools and works on the principles of subdivision modeling, it lets you use quads, edgeloops, nurms subdivision and so on.
(more info on subd here (http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/))
Overall i'd say it does not really matter which one you use, as long as it fits you, and as long as you consider that at times you'll have to switch from one another for particular reasons, say if you're exporting a low poly mesh for gaming, and you've modeled it using EPoly, then you'd better convert it to EMesh, do some edge turning from the edges that appear before exporting...
Also i think EPoly is a little heavier to handle than EMesh.

If you want to work faster and have better control, use Editable Poly. The toolset is MUCH more robust, and allows you to do things that would be a total pain in Editable Mesh. Game engines don't necessarily require that you use Editable Mesh, and EPoly is just fine for many of them. Take into account that Discreet has made no changes to Edit Mesh since version 3, whereas EPoly was introduced in version 4, and heavily enhanced in version 5. Edit Mesh is basically a dead toolset, that while occasionally useful, will limit you to outdated tools. Trust me on this, get used to modeling in EPoly, and your modeling times will be decreased by a third.

Thanks both of you
I was basicly using EPoly anyway as it does have a better set of tools.
