dragonz 06-19-2003, 06:04 AM Well, i decided that i wated to try some type of new modeling method. Point-by-point. and my problem is right now when i go to objects and create a polygon object....and the i go to the points mode, and then right click to add points.....i can't get any points to start my modeling! am i doing something wrong?

A very handy trick I use with pbp modeling.
1. go to vertex mode
2. push e key (move tool)
3. holding down the control key, clicks in the viewport adds vertices
4. moreover when u jump to onother viewport the last selected vertex's position remains the deep position in the new viewport when adding here new vertices. It is totally useful.

Yeah, but with the move tool activated u can modify its and every other vertex's position on the fly.

ive just recently started to use this aswell and now i wil forget all about boxmodelling a head. this fast, effective and yields better control to edge-loop the mesh. Remember those refenrce images int background though. :p
if you havent found it out already after created a basic nose, eye and mouth you can start extruding edges to shape the head instead of adding points.
a little trick i use is extrude the top polygons of the nose in the side view to all the way back to the neck. from the lowwest polygons on the mouth do the same over the chin and throat. then from the eye across the cheekbone and from the chin following the jawbone.
this will create a nice frame to shape the head. somthing like this:

wel, i have now attempted it, and when i try to extrude edges (using r8) it always extrudes at a very weird angle?! and it is like i have no control.... weird it is....

um, you have plaenty of control, first in the active tool manager there is an option to set the angle, and when using the ALT extrude, simply let go of ALT while extruding, and you'll find you can rotate the extruded edge around the original.

with a face selected the in extrude tool try the following:
click with the mous in the viewport
do not let the mouse button, now push the ctrl, move the mouse
loose ctrl, than alt, move the mouse
loose alt, than shift, move the mose
U have to see it, U'll be kicked off.

i've forgotten to mention, uncheck snap angle
and use a perspective viewport
